Aloha Pālehua Campers,

It is with a heart full of gratitude to announce my departure as your Camp Director at the end of the year. It has been a privilege to ʻauamo kuleana and serve our campgrounds and Ewa community in this capacity. Camp Pālehua will be in amazing hands and has a bright future ahead under the leadership of Aunty Eva Hubbard.

Mahalo nui to the Gill ‘ohana, employees and staff, community partners, stakeholders, and volunteers that have given of their time and aloha to care for our campgrounds! If the camp has had any success over the years it is because of you. They are our achievements and our success stories to share.

The saying is true, behind every man is a greater woman. Thank you Paoakalani for being the backbone of our camp operation and family household. I couldn’t have done this adventure without you.

Please continue to support Camp Pālehua and the vision of our campgrounds - a puʻuhonua for our community committed to the cultural preservation and stewardship of Honouliuli uka. It is incumbent on, especially those of our Ewa community that Pālehua be preserved and stewarded righteously. The physical and spiritual health of our ʻāina and people depend on it.

Featured here above Makakilo on the ridge line of Palikea the ʻapapane (Himatione sanguinea), a mid-sized honeycreeper with crimson plumage can be found in the ʻōhiʻa dominated areas of the Honouliuli forest. Known to migrate seasonally to lower elevations, the ʻapapane have developed an adaptive trait of feeding on the nectar of the foreign Eucalyptus flowers as far as Akupu when the favored ʻōhiʻa trees are not in bloom. Although not endangered, they are vulnerable to the same threats that other Hawaiian honeycreeper species face. Above Pālehua along the Palikea trail is home to a few of our native birds. Spotted here is a male Oʻahu ʻamakihi darting in and out of an ʻōhiʻa lehua tree. Oʻahu’s last surviving honeycreeper, this bird is one of the few native land birds that have increased in recent decades. Our Story

Camp Pālehua is perched on the southern slopes of the Waiʻanae mountains, nestled in a forest with commanding views of the southern and western coastline of Oʻahu. Camp is part of 1,600 acres of conservation and agricultural land owned by Gill Ewa Lands, LLC.

Our story begins in 2016 after Gill Ewa Lands LLC. purchased the former Camp Timberline and changed its name to Camp Pālehua. Camp Pālehua represents a re-birth of an enhanced vision that we share with our community and guests.

By using the natural environment, the mission of Camp Pālehua is to educate our community through culture, science, and the arts to be effective stewards of the land and engaged citizens who will make a difference in the world. We welcome individuals and groups interested in conservation education, cultural preservation, outdoor adventure, teamwork experiences and just plain fun!
