A TRI-CITIES HISTORY LESSON:

Thelma Pearson, an art teacher at Jefferson Elementary School, organized a small group of artists in the late 1940s. They met in her school art room to paint, support each other, hold workshops, and organize displays of their work. In 1947 or 1948, they wrote a constitution, officially founding the Allied Arts Association.

In 1950, the group held their first show at Richland’s Uptown Shopping Center. Known as the Clothesline Show, paintings were displayed on clotheslines strung in the breezeway between sections of the strip mall.

In 1965, the City of Richland Government agreed to lease the group a concrete block structure (built in 1909) on Lee Ave. This is the building you see pictured and where they are still based today.

In 2023, the Allied Arts Association: Gallery at the Park celebrated its 75th anniversary!

The Clothesline Show is now called Art in the Park. Today, this festival showcases over 300 artists and is the BIGGEST art festival in Eastern Washington and Northern Oregon! The event is also still FREE to attend.

Thanks Thelma!

Do you know the history behind The Fingernail stage? 🎭

📜 The 60-ton structure was originally built in 1963 as an office building for a construction company, later repurposed for events and inspired by boats on Lake Washington.

🔮 You can expect lively performances throughout the year including being ONE of the TEN stages for the Tri-Town Get Down Music Festival in June.
