No Friday videos this week and next week. We are busy filming some never before seen bonsai/penjing related content.

Just to share a taste of what we're working on, check out this suiseki stone that resembles General Guan Yu. He is often depicted welding his massive guandao crescent blade.

Also, did you know suiseki, along with bonsai, originated in China?

Hey folks!

We have a set date for our next Bonsai For Beginners class here at our nursery. It's on Saturday April 12th from 11am - 1pm. Please give us a call at (253) 872-8556 to register!

Class description:
The class is a two hour class taught by bonsai expert Robert Cho and his son Nolan Cho. The first hour we cover a brief history of bonsai and its origins, the fundamentals, and the principal care you need to ensure your bonsai is THRIVING and not just SURVIVING.

The second hour you will be taking a 5-6 year old outdoor Juniper tree and planting it in a ceramic bonsai container. At the end of the class, you'll take the tree home with you.

Has your bonsai ever been damaged? Ours has too and so has many of our customer's bonsai trees. Sometimes a damaged tree provides an opportunity for a new design or add some character. Remember, bonsai is never "finished" and is always changing. The best of the best bonsai trees have gone thru several changes and design. Watch what Robert does with this damaged cascading juniper!

Robert has been growing the structure of this juniper for several years. It was donated to him from a customer who moved out of the country and could not bring the tree with her.

This juniper had been studied carefully for several years and Robert was always hesitant to work on it because the tree wasn't speaking to him completely, yet. Well, today is the day! Very little needles were cut and the majority of the dramatic transformation is from applying heavy duty wire. Some of the bends are teeth clenching. Did any branches break from wiring? Watch and find out!

Comment and let us know what you think of the final results!

"You leave the bonsai outside in the snow?!"

Yes, you do, if it's a species that belongs outside in this native climate. This is a question we get asked almost every day and it's a common question for beginners.

We are here in the PNW (Seattle area) and it's been a snowy and cold morning. Trees that you can find in this climate should be left outside when it snows; pine, juniper, boxwood, spruce, maple, azalea, just to name a few.

If the temperature drops too suddenly, you can place the tree in a cold frame greenhouse, bury the tree in the ground (just up to the pot), place it in an unheated shed, or simply place a box over it. Do NOT bring into a heated space.

If you bring these trees indoors, you will wake it up from its dormant phase and force it to grow in a tropical climate where temperatures are warm and steady. The tree will not die immediately, but overtime, it will.

Sometimes repotting a tree creates an opportunity to re-design it. Check out this week's video where we did just that!
