The City of Saxman recently unveiled a new 35-foot Rock Oysterman Totem Pole, carved by Jonathan Rowan. This new pole replaces an earlier replica known as the Giant Rock Oyster Pole, originally created in the 1940s by local Alaska Native carvers as part of the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps program. We are honored to experience and share the profound richness of Native culture in our community through this beautiful and meaningful artwork.

Yesterday, a devastating landslide struck a Ketchikan neighborhood. Our hearts are with everyone in our small community who has been impacted by this tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the thoughts and concerns for Ketchikan pouring in from near and far.

If you are currently visiting Ketchikan or have plans to do so in the coming days, we encourage you to reach out to your tour or accommodation provider with specific questions. Currently, no flights or scheduled cruise ship visits have been affected.

This year, 50 small restaurants received a $50,000 grant, for a total of $2.5 million in funding, to help them upgrade, update, and grow their businesses.

Now in its fourth year, Backing Historic Small Restaurants has reached all 50 states across the U.S., plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, providing much needed support to nearly 125 historic small restaurants to date.

From Out to Sea Expedition Co "Summer finally arrived with plenty of sunny days, and we’ve had some incredible (& rare) wildlife sightings including multiple pods of Orcas (Killer Whales), several uncommon birds, and even a curious Humpback calf. One of the aspects we love most about being on the water is that you never quite know what you’ll get to see, so every trip is a little different!

-Humpback Whale diving close to shore
-Harbor Seals
-Arctic Tern
-Humpback calf checking out their surroundings & rolling around in kelp while mom feeds (so cute!)
-Mink with a freshly caught Sea Urchin
-Killer Whales (aka Orcas)- over the past few weeks we’ve seen the A54s, I12s, and B7s
-Bald Eagle dining on a salmon
-Ancient Murrelet with chicks (a first for us!)
-Sitka Black-tailed Deer (fun fact: Deer swim between islands!)
-Rhinoceros Auklet (We have had amazing alcid sightings this past week!)"
