They’re here! 🥳

Today our team marked the first leatherback sea turtle nest of the 2025 nesting season!

The nest was laid on February 4th in Martin County. We are waiting for confirmation from FWC, but we believe this may be the earliest nest on record for Florida!

A huge thanks to frequent beachcomber for informing us about this nest. Sea turtle nesting season in southeast Florida doesn’t officially begin until March 1st (therefore, most monitoring groups aren’t on the beach yet), so it’s always great to have help from the public when those first few nests start showing up in February!

If you stumble upon a sea turtle crawl before March 1st, please call and report it to FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline 888-404-3922. And remember, we use the clues left in the sand by the turtles to locate the eggs and safely mark off the nest — so please try to minimize walking over the area and do not attempt to mark it off by yourself. 👍
