Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission teamed up with the Florida Small Business Development Center at FIU to recognize Cupcake Sushi as the winner of the 2024 Restaurant of the Year for Monroe County.
Cupcake Sushi was founded by Lori Shubert in the City of Key West in 2013. It is the world’s first hand-rolled dessert sushi. Shubert successfully invented a system that rolls buttercream around moist cake with the use of a cold stone and she secured two patents for the design and utility.
Shubert notes that Cupcake Sushi has “been loved, nurtured, and raised by Key West locals” and that the business “suits Key West on so many levels. There is no other place I would rather have located my company.”
Shubert announced, while accepting the award, that with the help of the Small Business Development Center, she “partnered with a shark on Shark Tank,” the reality television show that puts small business together with big backers. She said Cupcake Sushi is now working with the Harrington Group to launch a franchise in the fall.

Thirty Days in Key West: Day Four
Since I am an islander for the month of June, I'll say "we", as in "we don't have normal little neighborhood grocery stores around here, we have palaces."

As the sign says, Fausto's has been around for 98 years, dispensing bread and milk and mangoes to the masses. Most days there are more bicycles in the parking lot than there are cars, but once inside, don't let the throwback interior fool you. Upon close inspection, you find an imported cheese department three times the size of most, an impressive butcher shop and wine department, and grocery shelves that look like they are straightened and refreshed every hour on the hour. And as for the mangoes - they are in very good company with the best fresh produce South Florida has to offer.

If all that doesn't make this a food palace, then I don't know what.

Today In Keys History, November 21

1954 - The crew filming “The Rose Tattoo” left Key West after shooting the final scenes at the Mardi Gras Club on Duval Street.

Also on this date:

1922 - Key West fish houses were expecting a strong season, as orders had already been placed to keep them busy through March. Crews were arriving to work on the kingfishing smacks and get them in good condition.

1932 - A Charity Turkey Shoot was held at Fort Taylor, and Messrs. Sally and Holland were the top gunners, although Ernest Hemingway, Charles Thompson, and L.T. Curry each scored well enough to be awarded turkeys.

1984 - Medical researchers were puzzled as to why Key West had 23 cases of multiple sclerosis, when, on average, a town of its size should have had fewer than one.

2012 - The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries announced that a shipwreck on Elbow Reef, six miles off Key Largo, had been identified as the British steamship Hannah M. Bell, sunk in 1911 while carrying coal to Veracruz.

Information compiled by the late Tom Hambright, Historian Emeritus, and Dr. Corey Malcom, Lead Historian, Monroe County Public Library, Florida Keys History Center.
