It might seem strange, but did you know the Killdeer can often be found on open grassy areas such as golf courses and parks? If you are out and about keep your eye open on this shorebird than can be found on your evening stroll.

In addition to their great eyesight, ospreys have a third eyelid called a 'nictitating membrane' that protects their eyes when they dive into the water. These adaptions and the dark feathers surrounding their eyes that reduce glare make the osprey a master fisherman.

Most gators on Kiawah are between 3 - 8 feet long but larger ones up to 11 feet in length can be seen. In cooler weather, they can be spotted soaking up sun along water edges. Just make sure to keep a safe distance from our island's cold-blooded residents.
