THIS EVENING FOR WIND AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR LEEWARD AREAS...

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Red Flag
Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect
from 10 AM this morning to 6 PM HST this evening.

* AFFECTED AREA...Leeward portions of all Hawaiian Islands.

* TIMING...From 10 AM this morning to 6 PM HST this evening.

* WINDS...East 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 40 to 45 percent.

* IMPACTS...A combination of strong winds, low relative
humidity, and dry fuels can contribute to extreme fire
behavior. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. A
Red Flag Warning does not predict new fire starts.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Heat from vehicle exhaust systems can ignite dry grass. Park cars on areas that are paved or where vegetation is trimmed and
cleared.

High winds contribute to wildfire hazard. Delay activities that
could throw off sparks until the wind dies down.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong
winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior. A Red Flag Warning does not predict new fire starts.

TROPICAL STORM GILMA: Tropical Storm Gilma is forecast to continue weakening as it closes in on Hawaii, bringing the possibility of heavy rain to portions of the islands on Friday.

As of the NWS’ 5 a.m. update, Gilma was 615 miles east of Hilo, moving west at 14 mph.

Gilma is expected to be a remnant low by the time it reaches Hawaii on Friday.

HURRICANE GILMA: Hurricane Gilma to approach Hawaii later in the week

Wind, seas and rain may increase only a few days after Hone, depending on how much cool water in front of Gilma causes the hurricane to weaken. Gilma first ramped up to a major Category 3 hurricane during the middle of last week and restrengthened to a major Category 4 hurricane early Sunday morning, before again losing some wind intensity later in the day. As of early Monday morning, Gilma was a Category 2, 100-mph hurricane.

While Gilma will continue to move in a generally westerly direction and inch closer to Hawaii, the hurricane's track has been shifting and may continue to do so through the week.

The core of Gilma is forecast to pass just to the north and east of the islands with impacts ranging from showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds to ramping up on the Big Island, likely to begin late Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Gilma is expected to weaken considerably before reaching Hawaii, and it is possible that it will be reduced to a tropical depression or wind and rainstorm by the second half of the week.

The combination of both tropical cyclones will likely bring an extended period of rough seas and surf to the islands, which will pose dangers to boarders, swimmers and small craft.

* WHAT...East-northeast winds 20 to 35 mph with localized gusts
around 50 mph expected.

* WHERE...Portions of Kahoolawe, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai,
Niihau and Oahu.

* WHEN...Until 6 AM HST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down
tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it
difficult to steer, especially for drivers of high profile
vehicles.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Watch out for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Make
sure tents and awnings are secure or take them down. Be prepared for power outages.
