Like a flame-thrower fueled by hurricane-force winds, the Lahaina wildfire raced mauka to makai, reducing whatever stood in its path to smoke, ash, concrete blocks and twisted metal. Then it reached the town’s iconic Banyan Tree.

Vintage 1970: The Pioneer Inn at Lahaina, on Maui's west coast, was the first lodging to open in Lahaina. Originally built in 1901 by George Alan Freeland, the Pioneer Inn debuted as a first-class destination for travelers passing through the island. Freeland built the hotel to the likeness of a plantation on the neighboring island of Lanai for a total cost of $6,000 including the land. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962.

Our hearts are broken as our prayers go out to our Lahaina ohana.

From a Post on MAUI BOUND...speaks volumes!

The restaurant I work at in Kihei (South Maui) was planning on only hiring people from Lahaina side, but then people like Jason Momoa, and others, telling everyone that all of Maui was closed changed all of that. Most people have been laid off now. A ton of businesses have closed. I’m mentally exhausted trying to respond to the hundreds, if not thousands, of Facebook and Instagram posts to tell people the truth. That Maui is open. The west side is closed. For those of you thinking about canceling, please reconsider. For those of you still planning on coming, we all thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, mahalo 🙏🏽❤️‍🩹😔

HOW TO VISIT MAUI WITH RESPECT IN 2023:

• Stay out of any affected areas. Lahaina is off-limits.
• Take a day to volunteer. Ask a concierge or host.
• Be mindful of people’s feelings. We all feel it.
• Consider donating to Maui Humane Society, Maui Strong Fund, Maui Food Bank, Maui Mutal Aid & more.

West Maui is currently closed. Keep an eye out for updates, and things are changing daily.
