Remember the importance of donating food during the summer months! While donations are typically abundant in the winter during the holidays, they tend to decrease in the summer, making it a crucial time for food banks and food pantries like KG Love Thy Neighbor. The summer months bring an increased need, especially with kids out of school and low-income parents having to provide more meals at home. When making donations, prioritize quality by choosing nutrient-rich foods like canned vegetables, fruits, tomato sauce and high-protein options such as canned chicken or tuna. These items offer greater nourishment compared to foods with empty calories like instant noodles or powdered soup mixes. Your thoughtful contributions can truly make a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
If you or your group are interested in contributing non-perishable items or making any donations, please contact us at [email protected]. Additionally, you can conveniently donate directly from our Amazon Wish List by clicking on this link: https://a.co/gq4WFAw
For monetary donations, visit our website at https://www.kg-ltn.org/donate/

Thank you, volunteers!

Last week, on Friday and Saturday, we had over 50 volunteers participate in our tourism video shoot.

With nearly 150 interest surveys submitted, the King George community stepped up in a big way to help us with this project. Many participants discovered new gems in the county to explore, and we can't wait to share them with all of you.

Stay tuned for a video in the coming weeks!

King George County is proud to announce the official opening of the Native American Heritage Trail, a self-guided driving tour highlighting the rich history of the Rappahannock and Patawomeck tribes in the region.

The trail, a collaborative effort between King George County, the University of Mary Washington Historic Preservation Department (UMW HP), and the Rappahannock and Patawomeck tribes, features seven informative signs and ten geocache puzzles located at key historical sites across the county.

“The Native American Heritage Trail is a significant addition to King George County,” said County Administrator Matthew Smolnik. “This trail allows visitors and residents alike to explore the history and culture of the Rappahannock and Patawomeck people.”

The trail signs were written and outlined by students in the department of historic preservation at the University of Mary Washington in collaboration with the Rappahannock Tribe and the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia. The students approached King George County Government to implement the signs as an educational trail throughout the county. King George wanted to provide the community and its visitors access to untold stories in a unique way and added a GeoTour component to the trail, where participants could hunt for geocache puzzles throughout the county and learn more about native stories along their journey. As a result, the county applied for a grant with the Virginia Tourism Corporation to bring the project to life.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate on this project,” said At-Large District Board of Supervisor David Sullins. “The Native American Heritage Trail offers a platform to share the important stories of these tribes and educate the public about their enduring presence in King George County.”

The Native American Heritage Trail is a free, self-guided driving tour. Visitors can download a map and guide brochure at visitkinggeorge.com or pick one up at the Revercomb Administration Building outside the board room (10459 Courthouse Drive). Participants can use the map to navigate the trail signs and geocache puzzles. The brochure has a mystery message that can only be discovered by solving all ten of the geocache puzzles.

Those who solve its message get a prize, but for those who only have time for one or two of the geocache puzzles, they can find small treasures hidden inside each geocache. This experience is both fun and educational; something the whole family can enjoy!

“The board of supervisors is excited to share the history of King George County with visitors and look forward to the revenue this project brings to the county and its residents,” shared James Monroe District Board of Supervisors Chair T.C. Collins.

Each sign and geocache located around the county allows you to explore some of the most excitingly beautiful places found in King George County while fostering a deeper understanding of the region’s rich cultural heritage.
