To welcome 2024, 14 of us flew to Bali on Dec 28th, boarded the Celebrity Millenium on Jan 4th, and cruised Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and ended in Singapore on Jan 16th.

An amazing adventure, beautiful and historic scenary, and very informative thanks to our guides from Tours by Locals and the ship excursions.

The most notable thing on the adventure was that despite dense traffic in most locations, and hundreds of motor bikes zipping in and out between cars, we rarely heard a horn other than a friendly 'beep'. There were no accidents, or bodies on the side of the road, or road rage screaming, etc. The residents are very respectful of each other, accept things as they are, and impart a sense of calm and balance. They are a mixture of Buddist, Muslim, and Hindu religions, worship in some of the same temples regardless of religion, and all seem to coexist very peacefully. We saw no fights in the streets, absolutely no guns, and no shouting even in crowded malls on Chinese New Year's opening day.

I think there are lessons to be learned for peaceful coexistence between races, religions, political views, etc. Life is much simpler there - and so much less tense and full of anxiety. If you have a chance, by all means spend some time there enjoying the quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

What Is ETIAS, Europe’s New Visa Waiver Program?

Do you need a visa for Europe? Beginning sometime in 2024, American travelers will need to complete an online application with ETIAS before traveling to Europe. The application will require a small fee and be approved within minutes for most travelers. Starting sometime in 2024, Americans, Canadians, and residents of dozens of other countries will be required to pre-register (using a system called ETIAS) before they arrive in Europe. While this may sound like a major hassle, it's just one more little hoop you'll need to jump through on your way to Europe: You'll submit an online application before your trip, pay a small fee, and travel on.

Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about ETIAS. Keep in mind that as of summer 2023, many details are still not known. Keep an eye on official sources to get the latest details closer to your trip.

What is ETIAS? ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a visa waiver program that requires international travelers from a designated list of countries (including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand) to pre-register before arriving in Europe's Schengen zone (for more on which countries are affected, see below). It's easy to think of ETIAS as a "visa," but officially it's a "visa waiver" — registering travelers who don't require a visa to enter the country.

How does ETIAS work? Once ETIAS is in effect, you'll submit an online application before your trip to Europe, and pay a fee of €7 (about $8 USD). Once approved, you'll be sent a registration number. According to the official site, most applications will be approved "within minutes," but if there are questions about your application, it could be delayed by days or weeks until things are cleared up.

When will ETIAS go into effect? ETIAS begins sometime in 2024. While it's unclear exactly when, it seems likely ETIAS will go into effect in the second half of the year. Authorities have announced a 3- to 6-month grace period upon implementation, during which they might waive the requirement for arriving travelers who missed this new regulation. (First announced in 2016, ETIAS was originally slated to begin in 2021. However, implementation was repeatedly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

How long does ETIAS approval last? Here's some good news: Once your ETIAS application is approved, you can use it to enter Europe as many times as you like over a period of three years (or until your passport expires) — provided you don't exceed the existing Schengen limit of 90 days out of any 180-day period.

Why does ETIAS exist? ETIAS is an effort to better track the border security of international visitors entering the Schengen zone. While this is new to Europe, many other popular travel destinations already have visa or visa-waiver requirements similar to ETIAS. For example, US travelers to Australia or New Zealand must submit an online visa application similar to the ETIAS process. And since 2009, Europeans visiting the United States have been required to register through the Department of Homeland Security's Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Europe's ETIAS appears to be closely modeled after ESTA, effectively treating American travelers in Europe the way that European travelers are treated upon arrival in the US.

Which countries are a part of the ETIAS requirement? All members of the Schengen Agreement are taking part in ETIAS. This includes all 27 EU members (including Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and Greece), plus non-EU members of the EEC (such as Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland) — but not the United Kingdom, which left the EU with Brexit. Effectively, the ETIAS area covers all of Europe except Great Britain and some countries on the eastern edge of Europe, including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia (which will not require ETIAS registration — though some of these places have their own visa requirements or travel restrictions).

How can I make sure not to screw this up? ETIAS is not worth stressing about — but it's smart to be aware of it, if you're heading to Europe in 2024. First, keep an eye on official updates to know exactly when it goes into effect. Once that date is established, you'll want to submit your application on the ETIAS website in advance of your trip. It's unclear how far ahead you'll need to do this, especially because it's a new system. While it appears that you'll be able to apply with fairly short-notice, if you want to avoid delays or other potential headaches, you can register as soon as the system is up and running and your travel plans are set.

How will this affect European travel in 2024 and beyond? Ultimately, ETIAS will become just one more small, manageable step to take before traveling to Europe. The real challenge will be making sure that travelers are aware that this brand-new requirement exists. It's likely that airlines will take the lead in making sure their passengers know about ETIAS — upon booking, upon checking in, and upon arriving at the airport — so that hopefully, by the time the plane boards, everyone will have taken care of this step. Upon arrival, each country is setting up its own entry-exit system (EES). Some may use automated kiosks where you'll punch in your registration number; others will make it part of the manual passport check. So the degree to which ETIAS complicates or delays entry could vary quite a bit from place to place.

How can I find out the latest? Here are two good resources where you can find updates about the launch date and requirements: ETIAS and the EU's ETIAS information.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BORN IN 1930's, 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's and Early 80's !!! First, you survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, your baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. You had no childproof lids on medicine ..medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when you rode your bikes, you had no helmets, not to mention, the risks you took hitch-hiking .. As children, you would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun. You drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle. You shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. You ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but you weren't overweight because...... YOU WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
You would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach you all day. And you were OK. You would spend hours building your go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out you forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, you learned to solve the problem . You did not have Play stations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........YOU HAD FRIENDS and you went outside and found them! You fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents you played with worms(well most boys did) and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although you were told it would happen, you did not poke out any eyes. You rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing you out if you broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. You had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and you learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

One of the saddest and strangest things while driving around the disaster zone was the contrast of color/lack of color. While driving, the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean was shimmering on one side, then you would turn your head 180 degrees and it was like you were in a black and white movie, completely devoid of color and life. It’s really hard to describe but you could feel the absence of life and energy. Mahalo to for capturing what I was feeling.

Aria and I saw this man shopping while we were at Walmart this morning. She stopped him to ask if he was Santa. He said yes and wished her a Merry Christmas as he walked by. Her eyes lit up and she got a huge smile on her face and we continued shopping. A few minutes later, he found us in another aisle and asked if we had a couple minutes to talk. It’s Santa, of course we have time to talk!!! He chatted with her a bit…asked her how old she was, her name, what she wanted for Christmas, etc. Then he grabbed some Christmas candy he had put in his basket and gave them to her along with $10 to purchase them. She even had enough extra that she was able to buy a chocolate surprise toy each for her sister and herself, that they’ve been eyeing by the register every time we go!

Dear Santa, 🎅

THANK YOU for keeping the Christmas spirit alive, not only for the kids, but for us all! ❤️

First of all, I want to thank all the MotleyCru2 members for another great trip. We had a few new joiners and they just fit right in with our happy little bunch. We always have a lot of fun, loads of laughs, and make dozens of new memories!

Radiance of the Seas - 14 night Panama Canal Transit. Our group of 20 embarked on the latest adventure on Oct 20th from Los Angeles. Our first port, Puerto Vallarta, was in the midst of a Typhoon and had closed their port, so we spent a few extra days at sea avoiding the bad weather. The weather was perfect, little or no motion on the ocean, so we were fine with it.

Our second port was Huatulco Mexico. A lovely little city with nice people, tasty restaurants, and perfect weather. We all enjoyed our visit and have added it to our list of places we would go back to on a land trip.

Costa Rica - always a favorite stop! The majority went on a custom tour with my local tour guide Gabriel to view the countryside and walk across the hanging bridges. He always gives great tours and is very well spoken and knowledgeable about all things 'Costa Rica'. My sister and I don't do heights, so we embarked on a tour to see the birds, monkeys, etc. at a rehabilitation center. Very interesting to see all the beautiful colorful birds and other wildlife from the area.

We crossed the Panama Canal in about 8 hours and saw the new locks. The whole process still amazes me even though we have been thru it a few times - the engineering used over 100 years ago is still in use today and opened trade for the entire world.

Next stop, Cartagena, Columbia. Was very warm and humid during our stop. A beautiful city full of art and history, and of course, emeralds. Since our last visit, the street vendors have increased in both numbers and bad manners. Without their constant nagging and not taking 'no thank you' for an answer, it would be a great port.

As luck would have it, after crossing the canal, we encounter still another hurricane, Hurricane Lisa in the Caribbean. Again the captain managed to skirt the bad weather and rocky seas and get us safely to New Orleans where we all spent a few days in the Big Easy at the Blake Hotel.

The Ship: Radiance of the Seas is an older ship, launched in 2001 initially and refurbished in 2016. Capacity of just over 2,000 it is one of the smaller ships currently on the seas. It is easy to navigate, well laid out, and offers multiple dining options.

However, Radiance is in dire need of refurbishment. Worn carpets, furniture, and features are outdated. In fairness to the crew, they were only 60% staffed and are working long hours every day. The service clearly reflected that thru no fault of the staff.

The lounge entertainment was perhaps the poorest I have ever experienced. The theater productions were fair and scarce. We always look forward to the shows and lounge entertainment and were very disappointed.

Oct 31 was a fun day - there was a parade for everyone in costume. Most of our group 'dressed' for the occasion. There were many cute costumes and we all had fun with the festivities.

Food - ah yes, food! The buffet was somewhat bland and most often cold. Some items were very good of course, but the salad bar was lackluster and had limited items available to create your salad. Soups were generally good, tasty, and hot. The Dog House had good hot dogs, brats, sausages, etc. but no chips or fries. Main Dining Room - dissappointing. You often had to wait an hour for seating if you were not on the assigned seating schedule. The service was very slow due to lack of staff. They tried hard, but over 2 hours for dinner after waiting a long time was not appealing. The food was good, but again often not hot. The most disappointing menu item across both the buffet and main dining room were the desserts. Basic, boring, and not tasty.

Specialty Restaurants. We had lunch in the Italian Restaurant, Giovonni's @ $26/per person. It was very good, warm, tasty, and well presented. Service was very good (few guests at the day and time we chose). We have previously eaten in Giovonni's on other RCCL ships and know that dinner is way too much food so having lunch with most of the same food choices was not only half the cost, but gave you the rest of the day to 'take it all in'. We also had dinner in their Brazilian restaurant, Samba's. It was very good, mostly beef choices, but some lamb and pork. Again, however, the salad bar was lacking in choices, and there were no accompaniments such as vegetables, potatoes, or rice served with the meat. If you aren't a meat lover, it would not be a good choice.
Service was very good.

Internet Service. They offer VOOM which is advertised to be the best internet at sea, and an app for your phone which has the daily planners, dining times, etc. VOOM is pricey ($250+ for 2 weeks) and works perhaps 35% of the time. Connection was very undependable. The app was also very spotty and not dependable. Lots of room for improvement before they claim to be the best at sea.

Diamond Club and Concierge Club - for Diamond guests & Suite guests, nice hideaways with tasty morsels in the early evening. Drawback in Diamond Club was the size - too small, not enough seating. Good idea, nice amenity, rethink location and layout maybe.

Cabins. The balcony cabins on the Radiance are well sized and have plenty of storage and closet space. Beds were comfortable. Furniture a bit tired, in need of rehab, but serviceable. Bathrooms - terrible! Showers had a curtain, not doors, and were approximately 28-30" wide. Not conducive to shaving legs or washing feet at all. If you were a large or extra large sized man, or a size 14+ woman, it was a challenge. The refrigerators need complete redo - they didn't really seem to keep anything COLD, we were told they were coolers, not refrigerators.

We had a junior suite, and the bathroom was very nice, had a full sized tub with shower, and ample space to move in the bathroom.
The walk in closet was very ample. We enjoyed the suite space and the deck, most of all the bathroom!

Having sailed on several RCCL ships, this was disappointing. They seem to be going the way of a competitor 'nickle and diming' you at every turn with vastly overpriced drinks (Mango Daquiri with a double shot of rum - $33), add ons, and cutbacks on service and conveniences.

While I will continue to book families on many RCCL ships for the amenities they offer for the kids, I will cautiously book my older clients (60+) on the older RCCL ships that haven't been in dry dock for 2-3 years.

On to our next adventure for the MotleyCru2 - perhaps Bali in Jan 2024! or Iceland & Brugge in 2023!
