My favorite thing about sailing is getting off the beaten path and this trip is just that. Sailing the Bras d’Or Lake is just absolutely amazing. One of the most unique sailing experiences I’ve had. To go from the cold and desolate coast of Nova Scotia to sailing on a lake is pretty surreal. 8/8/2025 - 8/18/2025

Rockland, Maine - North Sydney, Nova Scotia

Price Per Person: $2,600.00

This will be a long trip navigating the Gulf Of Maine, south coast of Nova Scotia, through the lock of the St. Peter’s Canal and into the Bras d’Or Lake, a Unesco Biosphere Preserve. Then a few days sailing the lake on our way across Cape Breton to North Sydney where there is an airport for your return trip. I can’t explain how unique of a journey this one is. You have to sail it to understand it. You will be hard pressed to find another sailing adventure with as much variety as this.

Since we have 4 hiking and sailing trips in Maine scheduled I figured I’d post up a few more photos before moving on to our next trips. I’ve been a lot of places in the world, but Maine is up there with the most incredible places I’ve been. Hiking different islands and exploring peaceful anchorages with a focus on enjoying the natural world. All while moving silently under sail in sheltered water. Does it get any better than that? If hiking and sailing sounds up you’re alley come check out our 2025 schedule and come join us! Another plus for traveling by sail is the ability to visit Acadia National Park without dealing with parking! No parking to deal with and there is a free shuttle bus service to every trailhead just a few hundred yards from the dock and the best view in the house onboard Resolution.

Talking to a friend delivering a boat today and he was making a write up of all thru hull locations on the customers boat. This got me thinking that I haven’t seen any recreational boats with this kind of detail. We have this framed right in the saloon where I encourage everyone onboard to take note of where all our safety equipment lives and the seacock locations. If something ever happened to you in an emergency would your crew/guests know where to begin looking for water ingress? Or remember where the ditch bag is? It’s easy to get complacent in anything we do, but being offshore can be serious business. Take some time this offseason to think about the what if’s.

Another winter improvement project. Most sailboats make use of Lee clothes to keep you in your bunk. They work, but on fishing boats we use these Lee boards with a cutout in the middle to get in and out easier as you can see in the second photo. On Resolution this winter we will be repurposing our back rests and turning them into permanent, bomber Lee boards which then also gives better access to storage which will be phase two of this project. Our boards will be a bit taller than the fishing boat bunks in the second photo and we will still have a Lee cloth just in case, but these will make life easier for whoever sleeps in the pilot berth as you do not need to undo the Lee cloth every time you get in or out.

After almost two years with the Max-Prop it was time to let it go. We initially figured sailing speed trumps all else, but the max prop has been nothing but headaches. Maybe we got a lemon? It is already due for a rebuild to tune of 1 boat buck and has constantly gotten stuck when trying to engaging in reverse…not good when approaching a dock. Calls to the company were met with “well the water is too cold where you’re sailing causing the grease to thicken up.” Also, the performance under power is noticeably bad compared to a regular prop and greasing and replacing zincs in ice cold water is not fun at all. A prop needs to be low maintenance and reliable. So out with our high maintenance under performer and in with our new Campbell Sailor Prop. We had one on the last boat and it was wonderful both for low drag sailing and great under engine power. Motoring up a fjord with 30 knots of wind on the nose needs umph from your prop. Back to basics and following my principles of K.I.S.S.

Little bit of a tech post: Our old house bank is now 12 years old and about due for replacement. I am also simplifying our battery system as well since we currently have two house banks and a start battery. With a small diesel like our 62 hp we don’t need a dedicated start battery so we’re going to go to two identical banks consisting of 4 230 AH Rolls AGM batteries which simplifies our electrical system a bit and gives us more energy storage than before as well. 4 people charging iPhones at once draws the same amount of power as the refrigerator running! We charge our batteries via our high output alternator, our solar array and our Watt and Sea hydrogenerator. Come plug your phone in onboard Resolution next season and check it out!

Our second trip of 2025 is Bermuda!! A great trip to really dip your feet into offshore sailing. Hard to believe this beautiful island is just 660 miles or so from our mooring! 5/22/2025 - 5/29/2025
New Bedford, Mass. - St. Georges’s, Bermuda
Price Per Person: $2,100.00
This is a real deal blue water passage. We will be navigating across the infamous Gulf Stream which as a pelagic longline fisherman I have made my living in and around for many years totaling hundreds of days in the “Stream”. This trip can be serious sailing, but it could also be surprisingly mellow. Either way you bring your A game and we will spend the first day on board with safety training on Resolution before departure. You do not have to be an experienced sailor to sign up for this trip, but you must have a resistance to seasickness or be able to manage it and a serious willingness to participate in managing the boat. There is nothing like seeing New England fade behind you on day one and then 600 miles later see the island of Bermuda with its electric blue water and coral reefs welcoming you through the town cut. That is a feeling that cannot be described. Only those who have been there understand.

Since we’re hauled out for the winter season I’m going to post a summary of each trip we have on the calendar for 2025. First trip of the year is 5/7/2025 - 5/11/2025
Kingston, NY to New Bedford, Massachusetts
Price Per Person: $900.00
This trip is super varied as we sail down the Hudson River for almost 90 miles before either heading down the south coast of Long Island or the north shore depending on weather conditions. Either way, we will sail through NY Harbor, get some open water sailing in and anchor somewhere for an evening at least once. Possible options for port of calls are Port Jefferson, Block Island, Cuttyhunk or a few other locations based on weather. It’s a great trip for those looking to gain experience coastal cruising, navigating busy shipping lanes, or just looking to enjoy sailing past the Hudson Highlands and enjoy being on multiple, unique bodies of water for an adventure.
All meals included.

She’s all tucked in and now the winter projects begin! Next spring she’ll be splashing as an even more capable and comfortable vessel than she is today which is saying something. Our 2025 calendar is up on our website and we’re doing a variety of trips from offshore passages to hiking trips to places not accessible by any other means. It’s going to be a good year!

We used the edge of this stalled nor’easter to head home from St. Pierre. Longest stretch of Easterly winds I can remember. We pointed ourselves at Provincetown, Cape Cod and let the boat sail us home with no course adjustments. She took us home with no input from us for 5 days. In one of the photos you can literally see the edge of the system where blue sky meets grey clouds. It was a unique ride home. If you’re looking to up your offshore sailing skills, a hiking or climbing trip to an extremely remote location or not so remote location or just an adventure come check us out.

Some culture shock to arrive to a city after so much time spent in complete isolation. Motorcycles and cars whizzing by is stark contrast to deep wilderness and abandoned towns. Resolution now technically in France.
