A quick overview of the lee-board project and storage modifications under the pilot berth…. I was determined to make the pilot berth a more functional bunk and having spent a couple thousand nights offshore in bunks of all shapes and sizes I knew exactly what I wanted and built it. I am certainly appreciative of lee-clothes, but they can be a pain to get out of bed in a hurry and generally just not as comfortable as this style berth as well as get weaker over time. Why sailboat builders don’t often design this style bunk is strange to me even on boats that are sold as “bluewater” cruisers. Resolution is set up with one job in mind and that is crossing large swaths of ocean in almost any conditions and doing it quick and safely. Since it’s winter and we’re dreaming of sailing I’ll be posting some thoughts on other setups on board as well. #sailing #cruising #boatwork #projects #woodworking #offshore #bluewater #adventure #travel #explore #goodnight #boatprojects
Waking up with no cell service, reading with my dogs and coffee in a secluded anchorage before heading out to spend the day hiking and exploring. Does it get any better? Those summer days can’t come soon enough. If you’re a dog person it may be possible to bring along Sam and Winnie for our hiking and sailing trips in Maine. If you’re not they hang at home. Our hiking and sailing trips are a magical way to explore secluded islands, enjoy fantastic sailing in sheltered water and see all sorts of wildlife from seals, porpoise, eagles and puffins, mola mola and more. #sailing #hiking #cruising #travel #adventure #maine #dogsofinstagram #rocnaanchors #explore #coffee #read #nostress #morning
Lee board for Pilot Berth project and upgrading storage locker project on the home stretch. This will make life more comfortable and generally easier for anyone using these lockers and to ditch using a Lee cloth for that bunk. Come join us this up coming season for a chance to sleep in the new berth haha. #sailing #boatprojects #woodworking #travel #adventure #cruising #capedory45 #capedory #pilotberth

Once in over a 20 year span have I been in what the old timers call a true “White Squall”. Regular squalls are typically under an hour in length sometimes only 15-20 minutes and don’t have enough time to build up any size to the sea state. The clip in the beginning was from a squall that lasted almost 5 hours with 60-70 knots of wind. It was so significant that a few hours beforehand the U.S. Coast Guard flew over the fishing fleet in the Southeast parts of Georges Bank calling us on the radio and told us we are about to experience a once in 75 year weather event. At that point it was a beautiful July day. I think about that day often when I’m sailing over George’s Bank and how we would handle that situation on Resolution. Resolution is about as seaworthy of a design as they come and we have many sailplan options being a cutter rigged ketch. In the second part of the video of us on Resolution we are getting ready for a well anticipated low way offshore. We chose to fore-reach which is essentially just sailing close to the wind with just enough speed on to maintain good steerage. We made steady windward progress at about 3 knots. If you notice our dinghy is secured with ratchet straps on the coach roof to dedicated padeyes, we’re reefed down and ready for battle before the conditions made it absolutely necessary so we could avoid being on deck in the coming Force 9 conditions. We made it through the weather unscathed and Lisa even managed to make some brownies. I’ve heard of a few rescues recently of people abandoning completely capable boats in moderate conditions because of inexperience so it’s motivating me to share some things that may be helpful for folks starting to venture offshore. Pancakes, coffee and trying to get better at differentiating species of Shearwaters. Kind of a typical day offshore on Resolution. #sailing #cruising #birding #pelagicbirding #capedory #adventure #travel #explore #nature #boats #newengland #wildlife #pancakes #coffee
