Called the "Land of the Burnt Out Fires" by the native Modoc people, the area that is now protected as Lava Beds National Monument is not only the homeland of the Modoc, but also the site of many events of the Modoc War, one of the last Indian Wars of the period of westward expansion.⁠

Pay a visit to the remarkable sites that witnessed the conflict between Modocs and the US Army, or stop by the Visitor Center to learn more about this important history from a ranger.⁠
