We built the Glamp-House with 50 feet of folding glass walls, opening up the living spaces to the outdoors, because we want our guests to experience living outside in absolute comfort. Unfortunately, when you take risks and try new things, sometimes you run into problems! One issue we noticed was that the extensive glass created a lack of privacy in the home. While the remote location offers privacy from strangers, you still don’t want your friends and family seeing you get changed!

The most obvious solution would be to install blinds, but cluttering up the seamless transition from indoors to outdoors goes against the design ethos of this unique gathering space. So, we did something much more cool: Every inch of glass in the home has now been turned into one-way mirrors! Almost imperceptible from the inside, these special windows are only reflective in the exterior, allowing you to see out without anyone seeing in. As an added benefit, they also reflect 80% of heat from the sun, making the home cooler and more energy-efficient.

We are only days away from the official launch of The Lazy River Glamp-House, so I thought it would be fun to look back at how we got here…

#1: This was my first draft of what “glamping” in a permanent structure could look like. It’s almost entirely outdoor space, with both the living room and bedroom on a covered patio separated by a fireplace wall. I wanted to put a dozen of these little structures out in the wilderness as a small resort.

#2: I commissioned this rendering based on my drawing in the first picture! It’s amazing what you can get done on Fiverr 😂

#3: I quickly learned that you are not allowed to build homes without an indoor kitchen and bedroom in Deschutes County, and that under residential zoning you can only build one home on most lots. So, instead of building a dozen small glamping structures, I decided to build one epic one! This was my extremely inefficient and self-made concept drawing.

#4: Shoutout to for taking on this outrageous project. Although his first attempt was miles ahead of the concept I gave him, it still had a ways to go at this point!

#5: This was the floorplan that we first submitted to the county for permits. Notice that the majority of the living space was still fully outdoors under covered patios. There was a whole legal battle over that… but it’s a story for another post 😅

#6: A dream come true! Clearly, this isn’t what I set out to build, but as the project evolved, it grew into a truly one-of-a-kind purpose-built vacation home and I could not be more proud of the results!

BTW we passed our final inspection with Deschutes County today, the Glamp-House is safe to occupy! Now I just have to setup a literal shipping container full of furniture and we will be ready to take listing photos!

I’m obsessed with wild food, and Paulina Lake is bountiful!

The Newberry Caldera is just down the street from The .RVR Glamp-House and it is the most incredible natural wonder. Two lakes, a hot springs, swimming holes galore, and not to mention all the Kokanee you can eat!
