Giantâs Causeway is an area of around 40,000 basalt columns created as a result of a volcanic fissure eruption. Itâs located on the coast of Northern Ireland in County Antrim, three miles northeast of Bushmills. In 1986, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and in 1987 it became a national nature reserve by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland.
According to the Irish legend, the columns are remnants of a causeway built by giants. The story is told as follows: an Irish giant (Fionn mac Cumhaill) was challenged to a fight by a Scottish giant (Benandonner.) Fionn accepted and built Giants Causeway across the North Channel, so they could meet up. The story has two endings: 1) Fionn wins, and 2) Fionn hides from the other because he realizes how small he is compared to Benandonner. So, Fionnâs wife disguises him as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner saw Fionn, he thought that it was Fionnâs child, and thought Fionn was a giant giant. He fled and destroyed the causeway on his way back to Scotland so that Fionn couldnât chase him.
