Heads Up, Travelers - Big Changes Coming to Southwest! ✈️
If you've always loved Southwest for its free checked bags and open seating, things are about to look a little different. Starting May 28, 2025, Southwest will begin charging for checked bags unless you're an A-List Preferred Member or flying on Business Select fare. Regular A-List Members and a few other travelers will still get one free checked bag, but for most people, those two free bags are going away.
That's not the only change. Southwest is also introducing a new Basic fare for its lowest-priced tickets, adjusting how Rapid Rewards points are earned, and - this might be the biggest shift - moving to assigned seating instead of the open boarding system they have had for decades. They're even adding premium seating options for red-eye flights.
These updates come as part of a bigger overall following major leadership changes at the airline. If you fly Southwest often, it's worth taking a closer look at how these new policies might affect your travel plans. And of course, if you ever need help figuring out the best flights and fares, we're here to make sure you get where you want to go!
Let us know what you think about these changes. Will you still be flying Southwest?
