Baby Baleen

Baleen is a filter-feeding system inside the mouths of baleen whales. To use baleen, the whale first opens its mouth underwater to take in water. The whale then pushes the water out, and animals such as krill are filtered by the baleen and remain as a food source for the whale. You never know what you’re going to see on tour! The other day, guests were lucky enough to get a very up close sighting of a critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal as it decided that the Mala boat ramp looked like a delightful place for a nap. Luckily, we were just about to head off on tour so we got a super special look at this beautiful animal before booking it on to our snorkel spot 🙌🏼 Video from First Mate Casey

The age old question… Can I touch it?? While it may by tempting to boop the snoot, it is actually illegal in US waters. The Marine Mammal Protection Act outlaws the “take” of any marine mammal, which essentially means the “hunting, killing, capturing, collecting and/or harassment” of any marine mammal. All joking aside, we want to watch and admire what these animals do what they do best- which is be themselves!
