BOOK DIRECT, Not With a Booking Agent...

🌴 😎 🌺 If you are making plans to book a vacation home using VRBO/Homeaway, here are some things to keep in mind:

VRBO/Homeaway was bought out by corporate giant Expedia for 3.9 BILLION dollars several years ago. In order to recoup that money, they charge our guests an extra “booking charge” of 6% to 12% at checkout when using the VRBO site to book.

To scare guests into staying on and booking on their site, several pop up windows appear warning that homeowners are scammers not to be trusted - nothing could be further from the truth. Most owners are nice families, just like you, who are trying to cover the costs of their possible future retirement home or family vacation home.

Up until 4 years ago there was actually no way to pay on VRBO’s site and EVERY transaction was done between owners and guests directly without fear of dishonesty. Beginning in early 2017, VRBO eliminated all avenues of direct contact between owners and guests, except through their site, to make sure they can collect their extra fees.

If you prefer to book through the VRBO website and don’t mind paying the extra fees, you can certainly do that. However, if you want to go back to the way it used to be and deal with the owner directly, saving “booking charges”, here’s how: Find the property’s own website. Many owners even have secure credit card booking features. You can find us at SunsetShoresMaui.com.

Suggestions for Booking Direct:
1) Search for your perfect vacation rental on any of the listing sites like VRBO, Homeaway, Airbnb, Tripadvisor, etc. (They ALL have “booking charges”) Make a list of places you like, noting the name of the property and location (town, island, city). Most owners call their house something and it should be pretty easy to figure out. (example Sunset Shores Maui)

2) Very important: DO NOT CONTACT THE OWNER THROUGH THE BOOKING SITE. We get penalized and eventually removed permanently if we have lots of inquiry conversations, but not many bookings on their site (It’s a ratio thing that the site “bots” look for).

3) Do a Google search for the house name and location to see if some of your favorites have a website or a page. From there you can contact owners directly. Many owners (like us) have current availability calendars and can process secure credit card transactions.

There you have it – you have just saved yourself the cost of groceries for the week, a fun island excursion, dinner at a very nice restaurant, or any number of things you would rather spend $300 to $600 dollars on!
