We just enjoyed listening to the vacation scenario based episode by The Aloha 360 podcast, and felt it was worth listening to for those planning a vacation on Maui. Keep in mind that you should research before you come. Some activities like snorkel or whale boats are booked up weeks in advance (due to required capacity restrictions). As John mentions, golf doesn’t seem to be too busy, but many other activities are hard to get into without advanced reservations, so prepare now!
John and Leslie put together a plan for those that are coming soon, with tips:
- Road to Hana - You need to be ready for bad weather. Earlier this month, it was washed out with rain. If one family member doesn’t feel like spending the whole day driving, even though it’s one of the most popular things to do when visiting, then just go half way and drive back! Hookipa is fun to watch big surf, Twin Falls is great for easy access waterfalls (weather permitting), Waikamai Ridge Trail is a great hike (weather permitting), the Garden of Eden, and Keanae Peninsula for Auntie Sandy’s Banana Bread. Then finish up in Paia Town. You don’t have to do the entire day to Hana, especially when the backside is closed due to road problems.
- Snorkel Molokini - Four Winds II Maui is great. You’ll see humpback whales in season no matter which boat. Redline Rafting now offers a 2-hour option (as well as the 5-hour) and is a ton of fun!
- Haleakala Sunrise - Seeing the sunrise from 10,000 feet is stunning, but they prefer the sunset (especially when you have little ones.) If the weather isn’t great, it’s hard to know until the sun is up, so going for sunset helps you decide before wasting time. Hiking is amazing up there, which can be a half-day trip. Grab sandwiches and do a picnic outing.
- Picking a hike that all like - Waihee Ridge Trail, a moderate hike but there’s a big elevation change. It’s 2 miles up and 2 miles down. The first portion is the steepest and hardest part. Some kids probably won’t want to do it. Makawao Forest Reserve is great for all ages. Easy to moderate hike. Insider Tip: If you do it in the morning, stop at Komoda bakery in Makawao and get donuts on a stick. Sliding Sands in Haleakala Crater is awesome, which can take all day. But you can go to the first cinder cone and come back. It’s also the quietest place on Earth. Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area is a beautiful drive and has miles and miles of trail options. The Redwood Forest hike is impressive. This is an easy to moderate hike.
