Happy Aloha Friday on Maui! A fast moving storm has brought strong winds, flash flooding, and scattered showers overnight with a wind advisory and flood watch in effect. Power outages, downed branches, and traffic light outages have been reported in some areas. Stay cautious as hazards remain across the island, though there’s a chance conditions could improve later.

Northwest: 2.0

Waves remain powerful and dangerous. If winds ease, the innermost part of Kapalua Bay may offer a sheltered spot, though occasional bigger waves are washing high onto the shoreline. Currents are strong, especially farther out near the points where waves are crashing. Extreme winds and scattered showers.

Ka’anapali: 4.0

It’s stormy early this morning, with strong winds and choppy water throughout the area. There’s potential for improvement later, which is why the rating isn’t lower. The south face of Black Rock may offer a small pocket of wind protection if winds shift more northerly, but currents will remain extremely strong near the tip. Kahekili could also improve, depending on how conditions evolve.

South Shore: 3.5

Stormy weather and challenging conditions are expected today. Scattered showers, and some power outages reported. There’s a chance things may improve. The smallest waves will be found along the south ends of the Kamaole beaches, though it’s still challenging. It might improve as waves settle.

Just a friendly reminder that not all waterfalls on the road to Hana are accessible for swimming. Many are on private property or used to irrigate crops in the valleys below. For swimming, we recommend Pua‘a Ka‘a State Wayside and Twin Falls.

SURF FORECAST: The current large northwest swell will gradually decline today through Saturday. A High Surf Advisory is now in effect for most north and west facing shores through 6 pm this evening. A new long- period northwest swell will arrive late Saturday and Saturday night, peak Sunday into Sunday night, then lower on Monday. This swell will give a boost to surf along north and west facing shores, but will likely remain below advisory levels. A pair of overlapping northwest swells will then move through early next week, with the first arriving early Monday, peaking late Monday and Monday night. The second will build Monday night, peak Tuesday then gradually decline through next Thursday. These overlapping swells may bring another round of advisory level surf to most north and west facing shores Monday afternoon through Tuesday night.

East shore surf not exposed to the series of northwest swells will gradually rise today through Saturday as the trades return over and upstream of the islands. Surf along east facing shores will then hold relatively steady Sunday, then lower a bit Monday through Wednesday as the trades ease slightly. East shore surf could trend lower again late next week as an approaching front disrupts the trades over the islands.

South shore surf will remain very small through the middle of next week. An out of season long-period south swell may move through the islands late next week, bringing a sizable boost to south shore surf.
