Utopia of the Seas refueling at Perfect Day at CocoCay. It's amazing to me that this costs less than refueling in a port like Orlando or Nassau. But I'm sure they have it figured out. Or maybe it's required.

Walt’s final days included visits from his immediate family members and a bit of optimism hours before his death

with some information from Bob Thomas’ biography, “Walt Disney: An American Original” — a must-read for Disney fans, with a commemorative Disney100 reprint now widely available featuring introductions by Walt’s grandson Christopher Miller and Disney historian/author Jeff Kurtti.

Once, when I talked to Ron Miller, he recalled Walt proudly introducing him as his son to one of the nurses looking after him.

Ron also told me that Walt was cheered by a note he received from actor John Wayne welcoming the studio chief to the “one lung club” telling Walt that he had adjusted well to post-surgical life.

Walt’s brother Roy brought him updates of studio and Imagineering activities, although Walt was pretty insistent that the Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t yet ready for Disneyland.

Ron also talked shop with Walt — as he was wanted to know how things were going at the studio.

Ron told him that “Follow Me, Boys” was doing good business at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and that people were anxiously awaiting his return.

According to Walt’s biography by Bob Thomas, “small things pleased him, as when Diane brought a basket of delicacies (to his hospital room).

“Walt enjoyed the visits with his family, but at times he seemed to seek solitude — as if he didn't want (his wife) Lilly and (his daughters) to see him in such pain.

“He grew weaker, and the drugs sometimes made him confused.
‘Don’t be late for the plane,’ he said to Sharon for no reason at all …

“His sixty-fifth birthday fell on December 5, but he was too ill for any observance. His strength continued to wane, and his voice became weak and raspy.”

But, “on the afternoon of December 14, Lilly visited him and she telephoned Diane later to say, ‘Oh, he's so much better. He got out of bed. He kept putting his arms around me, and his grip was so strong. I know he's going to get well. I know he's going to be all right.’

“Roy visited him that evening, and Walt seemed weak but lucid.

“The two brothers talked quietly about company matters, and Walt was intent on discussing Disney World and EPCOT. …

“Roy, too, was encouraged by Walt’s appearance, and he remarked to (his wife) Edna that night that he thought Walt had a good chance to recover.

“Walt Disney died at nine-thirty the next morning of an acute circulatory collapse (according to the death certificate).”
