So this will be our last season of renting Dancing Bear as we are contemplating moving up there part time at some point next year. Great for a girls trip with all the vineyards, a golf trip with two excellent courses or just fun with resort amenities, close by horse back riding, zip lining and river tubing. This is our dairy parlor at 5am. It’s the last remaining commercial dairy in the county. There are roads named after dairy farms like Phillips Dairy or Smith Dairy but the cows long ago left those parlors for the last time. This building is dry stack, cinder block with a skim coat of Portland cement in a grim white. The building is devoid of any adornment except for six evenly spaced lightning rods on the crest of the low slung roof. There is no overhang, awning or shutters giving it a Soviet Era eastern block sensibility to its appearance. It’s not pretty by any measure but it’s got a job to do and has been doing it well since 1981. There were dairy farms all around Polk county from small to big, they dotted many hilltops, several visible from our parlor. The old farmers had an unspoken competition with their dairy farming neighbors to see who got to the parlor first evidenced by the glowing building and the hum of the compressor in the dark stillness of predawn. This is the last beacon on the hill but coming up the hill from down in the valley following a line of cows in the dark it still shines like a beacon for us.
