The sun is out! After a couple wet, cold days, it’s a gorgeous morning in the Adirondacks! I stopped by Simply Gourmet for a breakfast burrito and took Maddie for a long walk on the Brewster Peninsula Trails on Lake Placid. There’s still fall color on the trails and snow at the higher elevations. Whiteface Mountain shined bright in the distance. So very thankful for this life adventure.

Great day hiking Wright Peak. Our 8th 46er peak. Wright is known to be extremely windy at the summit, but we lucked out with a calm day, hardly any wind, beautiful weather and very dry on the trail. Excellent conditions for a hike. Also great to see the fall color starting to pop!

I cut a few hydrangeas today! It feels like the last breath of summer, with a few maple leaves starting to turn color and pumpkins showing up at the market.

I’m heading out soon to complete the Cranberry Lake 50. Last September I hiked the majority of this Adirondack trail on my first solo backpacking trip! It was also my first bear encounter. 🐻 I took a shortcut last year skipping a section due to insane mud conditions, so this year I’m returning! My first day will be a repeat of some mileage from last year, but the other day and a half will be new territory. And this year I’ll be hiking with a buddy who I met last year on trail! That’s one of my favorite things about backpacking is the people you meet on trail. There’s instant commonality and camaraderie. 🏕️

Wish me luck! Hopefully I can skip the bear encounter this time around. 😂

Awesome afternoon hike up nearby Mt Van Hoevenberg, 15 minutes from our house. We hiked the original west trail years ago, but they’ve since created a new trail on the east side that’s incredibly well done. Lots of stone steps and fairly smooth walking (by ADK standards). It’s about 3 miles round trip, 900 feet of vertical gain, and a big payoff with spectacular views at the top. And for bonus points: easy and free parking. A nice option for visitors!
