It was a nice humid afternoon, with very little wind, for a prop balance on this Bonanza out of MS.

It’s been a busy last couple days balancing props to keep these guys running as smooth as possible. Weather caused most of these to be done in the hangar —a little loud but as soon as we finished and weather cleared they were headed to fertilize.

More pics from our whirlwind Prop balancing weekend. We went by Acadian Dusters Saturday afternoon in Church Point and balanced Kyle Smith’s AT. Super clean plane, nice guy, and he had a great helper. And, can’t forget a super curious and friendly dog. They were just beginning to plant rice here.

We finished Saturday morning in Kaplan with a balance that had us all a little frustrated. Sometimes they are easy, and sometimes they will make you think and work really hard for the perfect weight balance solution. Thankful to the mechanics and to Clay who helped us run this numerous times.

We’ve been working long hours but always find time in the evenings to go grab supper. Barry Boyette has fond memories of summers in Abbeybille when he was a kid and his dad was fish spotting. We have been going to Blacks anytime we came back to town, but they have been closed now for a while. We moved across the street to Dupuy’s, which came highly recommended, and the food was excellent. Also saw the end of a wedding across the street. Loved the street car they were using to transport the wedding party. Friday was a good day!

We spent Friday afternoon in Kaplan, LA at Vincent Flying Service. Clay and his pilots and mechanics were great to work with. We finished three yesterday afternoon and got to visit and catch up some. This is Rice Country and planes are planting this morning. Yesterday was a little windy - so most airplanes were grounded.

Balance #2 at Lejeunes Aerial Applications in Basile. We got to visit with our friends Robert and Shane. We got them fixed up and headed down the road. There are crawfish ponds everywhere we look. Also got some awesome seasoning from Shane!

We balanced a prop yesterday at Collinston Air Service in Oak Ridge, LA.

Cristobal was over us with light rains and winds picking up in the afternoon, so this balance was done with the nose in the hangar. It was so humid we had to resort to gorilla tape to hold our equipment, and even that wasn’t sticking well. We were blessed with a slow rain - just what we needed. It’s a busy place around there and several visitors dropped by!

We balanced the prop on this Thrush earlier this week. Barry balanced from the cockpit and I tried using our new light tool to check blade angle. Prop was balanced and this airplane is finally ready to go after having to pull the engine for some repairs. I believe they will be fertilizing corn today with this one! Happy Good Friday everyone!

Two years ago we traded our old prop balancer in on a new updated model. It was a good upgrade. This year, after many years of balancing props without it, we have added another diagnostic tool that will allow us to check the track of the blades on a prop. Occasionally, after balancing a prop, there is still a little roughness felt by the pilot. There are several things that can cause this such as a loose trim tab or a panel that doesn’t fit tight along the fuselage. But, sometimes it can be caused by a blade that is slightly out of track. This applies to all props from 2, 3, 4, or more blades. It’s very important that each blade track in the same plane, at the same angle, for a prop to feel smooth in flight. If a blade is 1/2 a degree off, or more, the blades will be fighting each other causing a roughness or vibration. The prop itself can be in balance but the out of track blade will make it seem to be out.

With the new stroboscope we will be able to look at each blade as the engine/prop turns and tell whether the prop is in track. On some props we can shutdown and tweak the blade back into track as a field repair. On others the prop will need to be removed and sent to the prop shop for repair. We look forward to balancing props with this new tool.

TRACK SHIFT — While this may come as good news for some, this is not welcome news for others as a slow and steady shift EAST in the track has occurred overnight.

IF this current track verified, it would put a landfall near Morgan City as a strong tropical storm or Category 1 Hurricane. Which would put the greatest impacts of the eastern side of the system in southeast Louisiana, across the New Orleans Metro, and south Mississippi.

For my Acadiana people, I wouldn’t let your guard down yet. But watch the trends. If it keeps swinging further east, your impacts could go down as the west side of this system will be the much drier/less impactful.

For NOLA, Southeast Louisiana from Baton Rouge to Slidell, and Houma to Chalmette..and along south Mississippi. Prepare for flash flooding rainfall potential.

A HIGH RISK for Excessive Rainfall has been placed for most of the area Friday night-Saturday. This is only issued for rare, more significant flooding events. Localized 15-18+” rain amounts possible.

Lastly storm surge. On the eastern side of wherever the system comes onshore, 3-6 ft of storm surge expected above normally dry ground.

Beautiful day for a prop balance on this 502 AT. It was hot- but a nice breeze helped. Thanks ACES Systems- we are loving our upgrade. Barry did all the work- I was just along for the ride!

We upgraded our Aces prop balancer and tried it out today on the 206. Worked great! ( gotta love Frog tape- holds and doesn’t leave a sticky residue).
