The arrival of November marks the beginning of American Indian Heritage month, and we are proud to celebrate Lake County’s rich indigenous Pomo culture. The seven Pomo tribes that call this region their home today are direct descendants of the Pomos that have inhabited the Clear Lake area for over 11,800 years, and are known especially for their intricate basketry made from lakeshore tule grass and other native plants and feathers. This beautiful tribal dance ceremony was performed by members of the Lake County Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians of the Big Valley Rancheria, California, and Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians at the opening of Xabatin Community Park in Lakeport last November.

Our clear, dark Lake County night skies have provided perfect viewing for celestial phenomena this past week. First the gorgeous Aurora Borealis, and now Comet C/2023 A3 blazing a trail across the horizon! Very cool capture by Friends Of Taylor Observatory in Kelseyville, California

Comet C/2023 A3 - Photo taken at 8:15 tonight as the comet "approached" the top of the Hopland grade. Used a Canon t2i DSLR, 3.2 sec exposure at f3.4 and ISO 400. Rokinon 135mm lens

Photographers and celestial spectators all over Lake County were treated to quite a show last night, as the aurora borealis made another spectacular appearance in our night sky! Conditions remain optimal tonight, Friday 10/11, to see this celestial phenomenon which rarely occurs over California skies. Note— to the naked eye, the northern lights will appear extremely faint. Pro tip: use the night setting on your cell phone, and set the shutter speed to max (around 10 seconds). Use a tripod to eliminate motion blur. A long exposure time will allow more light, which magnifies the colors of the aurora. Enjoy this heavenly show!

We admit it. We’re a little nuts here in Lake County, California—-walnuts that is! In fact they’re one of our oldest crops with cultivation starting back in the 1870s. Though they have been eclipsed or edged out by larger crops like winegrapes, many beautiful small orchards can still be seen around the region, and their fall foliage is striking! Have y’all ever seen how walnuts are harvested? Gives a whole new meaning to “shaking the tree”.

Today we honor those who serve in our military far and wide for their sacrifice and service to our country. Thank you, veterans!

There’s nothing better than a good ‘ol fashioned pie eating contest—and the contestants at today’s Kelseyville Pear Festival did the event proud with their valiant efforts to be the first to down a 3 pound pear pie as the crowd cheered them on! It was a tight race from the start, but in the end sophomore Elisha Watkins from Kelseyville High School earned bragging rights until next year. You gotta admire the level of commitment from all of these contenders. Proceeds from the contest will be donated to the winning eater’s local non-profit of choice. 🍐🍐🍐

One of Lake County’s most beloved annual events, the 🍐 fest is a celebration of this region’s vibrant agriculture community, and one of its most renowned crops.
