The Netherlands have a fun, slightly crazy New Year tradition. They call it the New Year's Dive and the most spectacular one to observe, or participate in, is at the beach of Scheveningen. On January 1st each year, regardless of the weather, over 25,000 people across the Netherlands jump into freezing cold water. 10,000 of them are at the beach of Scheveningen.

Soon it will be the shortest day of the year!
Each year there is a Winter Solstice light show at Newgrange World Heritage Site in Ireland.
Newgrange is a prehistoric monument in Co Meath, Ireland that dates back to 3200 BC. This means it predates Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza. The structure was buried for over 5,000 years until it was discovered in the late 17th century. It covers about one acre of land and has ancient carvings on many of its curbstones. Newgrange is best known for the illumination of its passage and chamber by the winter solstice sun.

There is a unique and very isolated lighthouse on an island in Iceland. It sits a few miles off the coast in the Westman islands. The lighthouse is accessible via helicopter but originally could only be accessed by scaling the rock it sits on. It is a popular destination for helicopter tours.
