Amazing- and right here in our backyard, well more like the front yard, but still.

While many of us might not be fans of this recent cold weather, it did do all of us birders a favor. The cold snap has brought with it our tundra swans!

Tundra swans spend the breeding season way up on the arctic tundra of North America, and only briefly stop by our part of the Upper Mississippi on their way to their wintering grounds in the Chespeake Bay region.

In Allamakee County, one of the best places to spot these beautiful creatures is along Red Oak Road between Harpers Ferry and Lansing.

Don't forget to join us for the Driftless Birding Fest on November 18th, where guest speaker Stephen Winter, Wildlife Bioligist for the Upper Missisippi River National Wildlife Refuge, will be presenting a program on tundra swans at 10:30 at the Driftless Center.
