Meet the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Sea Turtle Patrol! Every day before sunrise, rain or shine, the CMA Sea Turtle Patrol takes to our 36 miles of beaches to look for signs of sea turtle nesting activity, monitor existing sea turtle nests to make sure they’re safe, and keep an eye out hatchlings along our gulf beaches. But the Sea Turtle Patrol can’t do this demanding job alone and needs your help to ensure sea turtles have the best chance possible at a successful nesting season. Here’s some steps you can take that go a long way in keeping them safe…

1. PACK IN & PACK OUT, LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND - Objects like beach chairs, canopies, beach toys, etc. can create a barrier for sea turtles searching for a nest site. And can also create barriers for baby sea turtles trying to find their way back to Gulf.

2. KNOCK DOWN SAND SCULPTURES AND FULL IN YOUR HOLES - Flattening sand castles and filling in holes helps to eliminate the challenges sea turtles face when searching for nesting sites or baby sea turtles making their way to the Gulf. Keep our beaches smooth and obstacle-free.

3. DISPOSE OF TRASH PROPERLY: Large pieces of trash can create a barrier for sea turtles searching for a nesting site. Smaller trash can injure or get caught on the turtle. Fishing lines and ropes often get entangled around the front flippers of sea turtles.

4. DO NOT DISTURB SEA TURTLE NESTING SITES - these sites are marked off for a reason. Give the nesting site a wide birth to ensure the hatchlings have the best possible chance of hatching.

5. TURN OUT LIGHTS - Sea turtle hatchlings use moonlight to find their way to the water. Artificial light confuses the hatchlings and directs them inland instead of to the Gulf. Lights on shore can also discourage mother sea turtles from nesting on the beach. Sheraton Sand Key Resort and its installation of anti-reflective windows and amber lighting are a perfect example of how we can be good stewards for sea turtles.

6. STAY ALERT WHILE BOATING - Avoid sea turtles while boating. Collision impacts and propellers can result in injury or even death of sea turtles. Slow down and be on the lookout for our sea turtle friends!

Sea turtle nesting season spans from May 1st to October 31st. Together, following the tips above, we can make this the most successful sea turtle season to date! 🐢❤️

Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸

June 14 commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

To date, there have been 27 official versions of the flag, but the arrangement of the stars varied according to the flag-makers’ preferences until 1912 when President Howard Taft standardized the then-new flag’s 48 stars into six rows of eight. The 49-star flag, as well as the 50-star flag, also have standardized star patterns. The current version of the flag dates to July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. 🇺🇸

Early bird gets the shells! Shelling is a popular activity at America’s Best Beaches. Here’s a few tips to get you started!

🐚 The best times to look for shells are after a high tide, after a storm, in the morning, and during our winter months.

🐚 Go where the people aren’t - more secluded beaches will provide a better selection of shells. Fort DeSoto north beach is our favorite spot!

🐚 Get your feet wet! You may need to wade into shallow water to find the treasure.

🐚 Collect responsibly! Please inspect your sea shells and never harvest live marine animals from our waters. These animals play a vital role in keeping our beaches healthy and happy for all to enjoy. Please always return live marine animals where you found them.

Please note: Featured in this video is an expired sand dollar. It’s distinguishable due to its smooth surface and white color. Green sand dollars are alive. If you find one, please return it to the water immediately!
