There are replica Navajo hogans at Grand Canyon West. They are impressive log structures and we give a little history on the Navajos and hogans. This woman calmly interrupted me and said, “What kind of snake is that?” I was standing right below it. Two ladies screamed like Michael Myers was chasing them and ran out. This is a western diamondback rattlesnake. It was trying to stay warm as a cold front moved in. It was calmly watching us and I explained their vital use to the Mohave ecosystem. It was more interest in staying warm than giving us a rattle show.

One of the greatest mafia films ever made is ‘Casino’ starring Robert DiNiro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pecci. It’s based on the real life of Frank Rosenthal and his operation of the Stardust Casino. Frank wrote the book that inspired the film. He’s the one who created Las Vegas odds and moved sports betting off the streets. He opened the first Sportsbook at the Stardust. You can Google the address and see the house Frank lived in from the address on the invite.

Joshua trees require very unique circumstances to survive. They need extreme cold and heat to bloom so our snow and 115 degree heat is perfect for them. They also don’t have tree sap so bees don’t pollinate them. We have pronuba moths and they pollinate the trees.

The Zion snails were discovered in 1925 by Henry Pilsbry. They don’t actually live in the Virgin River. They live on the walls where spring water runs down the walls. You can see them on the river walk to the narrows.

Jedediah Smith is a name few of us recognize because much of his life contributions are now being discovered. His early explorations lead to the discovery of the South Pass, the dominate route of the Oregon Trail across the Continental Divide. Smith fought a bear with a knife after being ambushed. The bear scalped him during the skirmish. He had one of his scouts stitch it back on and continued onward. He died searching for water in what is now Kansas at the hands of the Comanche. His body, journals, and maps have never been found but recent discovery of documents from members of his exploration parties shed new light onto his contributions towards early mapping of America. He went further than what Lewis and Clark ever imagined by foot but unfortunately died.
