The Castaneda is an historic Fred Harvey Hotel located in beautiful Las Vegas, New Mexico, along Amtrak's Southwest Chief line. The hotel opened in 1898 - the first Harvey Hotel in the Southwest. Teddy Roosevelt came with the first Rough Riders reunion in 1899, and the Castaneda became famous for New Mexico hospitality. It closed in 1948 and was derelict for more than fifty years until purchased b

y Allan Affeldt of La Posada Hotel in 2014 for a multi-year, multi$ million restoration. Now the Castaneda has been completely restored, with a fabulous restaurant and full of beautiful antiques. The project has received national awards and recognitions, from CBS Sunday Morning to the state historic preservation office. Yesterday the Castaneda had a visit from 70 members of the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society. These railroad history buffs are having a convention in Albuquerque and they wanted to learn a little about Las Vegas’ railroad history. When they learned that LV was having a problem with its water system, they not only brought their own drinking water and lunches, they even brought in ports potties to meet the City’s water conservation mandate. After a tour of the Castaneda and the Rawlings building, many in the group caught the train for the trip back to Albuquerque. History enthusiasts are a big part of our customer base, and Las Vegas offers historic lodgings, walking and trolly tours for such groups. Our thanks to SFRH&MS for spending time in Las Vegas, and for doing their part to conserve water while the City repairs its facilities.

As many of our friends know, Las Vegas, New Mexico has been dealing with a shortage of water after the recent floods incapacitated the City’s water treatment facility due to increased amounts of silt in the water. In keeping with the City’s guidelines we stopped our laundry facilities, and as you can imagine the dirty sheets and towels stacked up quickly. Thankfully we were able to find an out of town company to clean our laundry in Santa Fe. Our thanks to everyone who is pulling together to conserve water to get through this short term crisis. We will keep you updated as the situation evolves.

A view toward the Las Vegas train station from the Castaneda arcade on a windy winter day. It was bright and sunny today, but tomorrow may be very different as a winter storm and lower temperature will be settling into northern New Mexico for the next few days.

So what comes after New Year’s? Starting January 2nd we begin the “Big Takedown “ At Snowdrift this means wrapping up the largest tree in tarps, and then hauling it down into the basement to the “Christmas room”. If you are decorating 3 hotels (La Posada, Castaneda, and Plaza) , an art space (Snowdridt) and a museum (Affeldt Mion Museum), you are looking at doing this roughly 40 times just for the trees alone, never mind the wreaths and other decorations. While Dan is Father Christmas while decorating, he become Mr Scrooge during the takedown, as he insists on having everything very organized in preparation for Christmas 2024.

Wouldn't you love to be standing outside the Castaneda Hotel waiting to be seated in an Indian Detours car to head out to the ruins of the Pecos Mission? Wonder what was packed for lunch this day?
