Las Vegas on Monday failed to reach 100 degrees, meaning the area broke a record.

The Atomic Age truly was unlike any other time in history💥⚛️

In this photo, actor and comedian Danny Thomas posed outside of the Nevada Test Site in May 1957 for a staged photo that would be placed in the Sands casino's time capsule to preserve the memory of nuclear testing outside of Las Vegas.

Pictured here are guests at the Last Frontier pool watching a mushroom cloud rise from the Simon Test, part of Operation Upshot-Knothole conducted in April 1953.

March 6, 1966, Las Vegas, Nev. -- Landmark tower -- that's what it is called -- is nothing more than a landmark in Las Vegas (Nev.) shopping center.
It is Nevada's tallest unused and unoccupied structure. It was intended as a hotel.

Vegas Showgirls - sunbathing, back in the day...

Showgirls by the pool, Las Vegas, August 1958. Photo by Allan Grant, LIFE. The women's names are unknown. The location has been identified as the home of burlesque producer Harold Minsky, 5712 Kelley Ln (demolished; now part of the airport).

Below is our original caption which focused on a different neighborhood:

The legend of “Naked City” – the neighborhood behind the Stratosphere – says the area was nicknamed in the 60s because of its sunbathing showgirls at various apartments. But is the story true? The answers I've gotten are mixed. The phrase comes from a book, movie, and TV series – it's shorthand for lawless inner city – and the earliest I can trace the name being used in print for Las Vegas is 1982 when crime was soaring in this neighborhood. Aku Aku at the Stardust, Summer 1960.

The restaurant opened earlier at year. Several of these Easter Island replica statues carved by Eli Hedley stood around and in the restaurant. After the restaurant closed c. 1980, the main, 30-foot statue in front stayed on site until '87 when it was donated to Clark County. The county placed the statue the following year at Sunset Park, where it remains today.

On July 7, 1930, construction began on the Boulder Dam, now designated as the Hoover Dam. Construction took 5 years, which was two years ahead of schedule and millions of dollars under budget!

It took 5 million barrels of cement, 18 million pounds of structural steel, 21 million pounds of gates and valves, and 840 miles of pipe to build the dam. The project averaged over 3,500 workers a day.

The Boulder Canyon Project Act passed the Senate on December 14, 1928, the House on December 18, and was signed by President Calvin Coolidge on December 21 that year. This historic legislature made way for the building of Hoover Dam. Visit https://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/history/articles/chrono.html for more historic dates.
