- Is part of our show this year. We're so exited to have this aircraft and Airforce team in our community. The A-10C Thunderbolt II is the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. They are simple, effective and survivable twin-engine jet aircraft that can be used against light maritime attack aircraft and all ground targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles. The first production A-10A was delivered to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, in October 1975. It was designed specifically for the close air support mission and had the ability to combine large military loads, long loiter and wide combat radius, which proved to be vital assets to the United States and its allies during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Noble Anvil.

In the Gulf War, A-10s had a mission capable rate of 95.7%, flew 8,100 sorties and launched 90% of the AGM-65 Maverick missiles.

This is just one of the great performance taking place at this year's event.

AviationHistoryInMohaveCounty (Part 3 of 4)
In November 1927 the Aero Corporation in Los Angeles established Standard Air Lines to fly the “Fair Weather Route” and offer cargo as well as passenger service to Phoenix, Tucson, and Douglas, Arizona and El Paso, Texas. This was Arizona’s first scheduled passenger airline service.

In 1930, Standard Air Lines was acquired by Western Air Express. Incorporating this southern route allowed the company to provide service to the entire southwest, and even into Mexico. Further expansion came with a Transcontinental Air Transport merger.

Established in 1929, Transcontinental Air Transport, the first coast to coast passenger air service, was the brainchild of Clement Melville Keys, a swashbuckling financier and former editor of The Wall Street Journal. For this revolutionary endeavor he secured support from the GM truck division of General Motors, the Pennsylvania Railroad, and Bancamerica-Blair, a group of investment bankers.

He also acquired controlling interest in the Curtiss Aeroplane Company and combined it with the Wright Aeronautical Corporation to form the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. The board of directors, consultants, and advisors included members of the Vanderbilt and Rockefeller families and Charles A. Lindbergh. Lindbergh’s involvement led to T.A.T being dubbed “The Lindbergh Line.”

By combining daylight flights and nighttime rail links the coast-to-coast time was cut by twenty-four hours. “For those whose time is too important to waste” was the T.A.T. tag line for initial promotion.

AviationHistoryInMohaveCounty (Part 2 of 4)
Until its merger with Delta Air Lines in 1987, Western Airlines that began as Western Air Express was the oldest continuously operating air carrier in the United States. The Los Angeles, California based company was incorporated in July 1925 by Corliss Champion Mosele, a WWI combat pilot of renown, with Harris Hanshue as the CEO.

The company started with twenty-four employees and six Douglas M-2 airplanes. Its hanger, repair facilities and offices were in a renovated movie studio.

It was launched as an airmail operation and the flight on April 17th, 1926, was a delivery to Salt Lake City with a fueling stop in Las Vegas. National media chronicled the history making flight by pilot Maury Graham.
On May 23rd, the company again garnered headlines when Ben Redman and J. A. Tomlinson paid for transport to Los Angeles from Salt Lake. Western Air Express was unprepared for passenger service, so the two daring men sat on mail sacks during the flight!

By June, however, the company was capitalizing on the new market. The fleet had been modified to carry mail, passengers, and cargo. And at the end of December, the company proudly noted that with 518 flights they had carried more than 70,000 pounds of mail and 258 passengers. Then the company initiated an expansion program that included mergers as well as establishment of new routes with terminals and airfields at locations such as Kingman.... [ Part 3 coming next week]

AviationHistoryInMohaveCounty (Part 1 of 4)
A new chapter in Mohave County’s rich aviation history will be written on April 1, 2023, with the Laughlin Bullhead Air Show at the Laughlin Bullhead International Airport in Bullhead City, Arizona. This exciting celebration of aviation heritage links the Colorado River Valleys future with the pioneering airline companies that transformed the county into a dynamic transportation hub in western Arizona.

A 1928 editorial published in the Arizona Republican noted that savvy investors would soon be looking to Kingman and Mohave County. Mining, ranching, and farming were making the county an economic powerhouse. Key to its dynamic growth was transportation – the railroad, Route 66, and the newly opened Western Air Express terminal in Kingman. [ Part 2 coming next week]
