FYI - (For those of our guests traveling south to Hill City area) - April 28th to June 13th part of HWY 385 closed, just north of Hill City.
On Monday, April 28, 2025, a complete road closure is scheduled to begin on U.S. Highway 385 between Be Still Road and Calumet Road in the Custer area. Access to Be Still Road will be maintained by the contractor for local residents with wait times estimated up to 15 minutes. The intersection of Highway 385 and Sheridan Lake Road will remain open. This planned closure between Be Still Road and Calumet Road will be in place through Friday, June 13, 2025.
Several area recreational facilities in this area will be impacted by this Highway 385 closure. The South Beach Campground will remain accessible via Calumet Road. To access Calumet Road via Highway 385, motorists need to approach from the south. Sheridan Lake Fishing Pier and parking lot is now closed through Friday, June 13, 2025. Fishing access from Dakota Point and Sheridan Lake Campground will not be impacted. Prospect Rock Crawling Trail (Trail 6830) will be closed from Monday, April 28, 2025, through Friday, June 13, 2025. The Pactola Visitor Center is closed for the 2025 season.
The posted detour for this closure will be S.D. Highway 44 and U.S. Highway 16. The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) recommends that travelers use the detour route and exercise caution when using non-maintained roadways.
Once completed, this section of Highway 385 will feature safety improvements, including wider shoulders on each side of the road where possible, improved road curves to meet current design standards, additional turning lanes to improve traffic flow, and new surfacing.
