Congrats to our friends from Colorado, Pat Perry Johnson & Pat Gephart for their successful summit of Tengkangpoche Peak. Not only did they make it to the top but these ballers set a new route up the North face in true alpine style. They were nice enough to carry our flag up there but to be honest we just helped with some permits and arranged porters, they did the hard work of planning their trip and figuring out the logistics. Well done fellas, look forward to hearing all about it when you get home! Special shoutout to Sonam Itrek Everest for helping with the permits and cutting through the red tape.

Hello Friends & Former Guests,

I hope you are all doing well and getting through this tough time ok.

As you may be aware, the 2020 Spring trekking season in Nepal was closed early due to coronavirus travel restrictions. In fact we only made it through about 20% of the trips we had planned before the border closed. Like most of the world Nepal has been on lockdown since mid-March. Unlike other parts of the world there is no social or financial safety net for the people that are struggling there. At iTREK we are committed to ensuring our office staff can survive through this tough time however many of our guides and porters work on a contract basis and rely solely on the daily rates they are paid during their treks and the tips they receive afterwards from guests. With 80% of our trips cancelled this Fall it has left many of them in a difficult position. We have had a few former guests reach out to ask how they could help their guides so we started a fundraiser.

We have ten full time trekking guides that have been committed to our company for many years, many of them have been with us since the business started in 2007. 100% of the funds raised through this will go directly to them. If you have a specific guide or porter you would like the funds directed to we will ensure this happens. You can specify this in the comments section or write to me directly at [email protected]. Otherwise any funds that aren't specifically marked will be evenly distributed amongst the group.

I understand this is a difficult time for everyone right now and we are all facing various financial difficulties of our own. Anything you can contribute, however large or small will be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to contribute you can do so through the GoFundMe campaign at this link - gf.me/u/xzzzs6

We all have fond memories of our time in Nepal and we long for the days when we can travel freely again. Our guides are also eager to see visitors in their country again and will be waiting to greet you with a smile the next time you
arrive.

Thanks & Namaste from the iTREK Nepal Team.

-Rick

Congratulations to Doma Sherpa Pinasa who stood on the top of the tallest mountain in the world today. She made it to the summit of Mt. Everest at 5am this morning. You are an inspiration to us all and we are very proud of you. Safe travels home and look forward to seeing you back in Kathmandu!

Sonam Sherpa and our guests Robyn & Susan got to visit with Doma Sherpa Pinasa as she prepares at basecamp for her Everest Summit climb later this month. Good luck Doma, you are amazing!

In more awesome news Tim Bruns, Perry Johnson & Ngima Sherpa successfully made it to the summit of Loboche East today. 6,119m (20,075 feet) These are the first photos I've received from the summit, guessing Ngima is taking the pictures. Well done to all. Now get back to Namche and enjoy a celebratory drink! Look forward to seeing you guys back in Kathmandu. www.itreknepal.com

Congratulations to Pat "Perry" Johnson & Ngima Sherpa on their successful summit of Island Peak! At 6'5" and 5'4" it's possible that they are the shortest and tallest people to ever summit together. There are unconfirmed reports that Perry made a "man-bridge" over the crevasses that Ngima was able to walk across. Well done fellas! www.itreknepal.com

We are very excited for our dear friend and future colleague, Doma Sherpa Pinasa, on her Mt Everest summit expedition. Doma is raising awareness for gender equality and women's empowerment as well as giving a strong voice for Sherpa community in Nepal. Nearly every expedition that has ever climbed that mountain has been done with the support of the Sherpas. They carry the gear to basecamp, they feed the foreigners, they build the dangerous route of ladders through the Khumbu icefall and they lead them up the mountain to get them to the summit. Then you read the newspaper or a book and their names are often forgotten. Even worse their government exploits their efforts for financial gain and gives very little back in return. This is Doma's turn to stand on the mountain for herself. We wish her all the best on her journey and support her all the way. Good luck Doma!

100K GIVEAWAY: TRIP TO EVEREST BASE CAMP!

As some of you may already know we are giving away a trip for two to Everest Base Camp! We have partnered with Kara and Nate to offer this exciting tour for you and a friend. Please check out this short video that explains the giveaway and how to enter. (Some quick background - Kara and Nate first came to trek with us in the Spring of 2016. They were referred by a friend of a friend in Tennessee. Their Youtube channel was just getting started and we gave them a good deal on a trek in exchange for making some video blogs for us. We had no idea how great the videos would be and how big they would become (although we kinda suspected it because they are pretty awesome). To celebrate them reaching over 100,000 subscribers we decided to do this giveaway. Anyone can enter and if you know anyone that might be interested please share it with them. The winner will be drawn on March 5th. Good Luck!!!

The Sherpas work hard and play hard. Here they play a game called carrom in Namche Bazaar to pass the time. Visitors can join in and even wager money for some fun. Thankfully it's all in rupees because it is very difficult to beat these guys!

The city is divided by which side of the temple you live on. We watched for hours as they played tug-o-war with a 3,000 lb ancient chariot in the main square, smashing into buildings and screaming battle cries into the night. At one point, as it often happens, someone is hit by a flying object and the two sides drop their ropes and it turns into a street fight. We rushed back into the building as stones smashed against the walls of the restaurant we were in. Once the mob moved south of us and the sound of rocks dissipated we snuck out a back door and through a secret alley that led to our getaway car. This is not make believe. This is Nepal.

The Helambu region is a great trekking region in Nepal. Perfect for those with a shorter timeframe that still want a challenge, you can do the full circuit in 6-7 days. It's conveniently located just 2 hours drive from Kathmandu and with very few tourists you will have the mountains to yourself. We saw on average only one other trekker each day! The best part about this area are the locals. The Helamo's are extremely hospitable and you will undoubtedly be invited into their homes to sit around the kitchen fire each evening.
