We continue looking at the unique history between Fort Leavenworth and local area as we prepare celebrate the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday in June. In the spring of 1744, Chevalier Pierre Rene' Harpin de la Gautrais, a French engineer, traveled up the Missouri River and selected the site for a trading post. Located on rising ground overlooking the village of the Kansas Indians on Salt Creek, Fort de Cavagnial, as the fortified trading post was called, remained an outpost of France in Kansas for 20 years.
The fort's precise location remains a mystery, but it is believed to have been located somewhere northwest of Fort Leavenworth. An inscription on a marker, located along Sheridan Drive, states that the site is within view of the visitor.

2025 Martin King Celebration. The Leavenworth NAACP is proudly celebrating the 2025 Martin Luther King Day of Service with a heartfelt Community play honoring the Oblate Sisters (Black Nuns), who courageously came to Leavenworth in April 1888 to take on the vital mission of educating and caring for Black orphans, previously overseen by the Sisters of Charity. Tickets are $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for Children/students. Tickets are available at the Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum, 412 Kiowa St, Leavenworth, KS 66048. 913-682-8772
