Mike Zahner used MSPS President as his model during his talk during the panel discussion on Survey Necessities. Mike made good points on how each team member carried weighty responsibilities such as the surveyor's license, liability, firm's safety record, errors and omissions record, etc.

GeoLearn was pleased to support MSPS by sponsoring the break on Friday April 28th at the 2023 Spring Workshop.

A Unique Point on Earth - Most people are aware of the Greenwich Meridian. Set as 0 degrees longitude, it separates east from west in the same way that the Equator separates north from south. It also sits at the center of our system of time zones.

However, few people are aware of the four locations on earth where 45 degrees latitude and 90 degrees longitude intersect.

In rural western Marathon County, Wisconsin (USA), near Poniatowski, a small county park has stood since 1969 marking the intersection of the 45th Parallel North of Latitude and the 90th Meridian West of Longitude. Why is this important? This point in Marathon County is the most accessible as two points are located in oceans (Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean) and one point is found in a remote location in a mountainous region of China.

The New Guy: Tim Burch takes over as executive director of NSPS

I am a second-generation surveyor, having started my career in high school as a last-minute rodman for my father’s survey crew. It was my career goal to become an architect but several summers of field and office tasks in a surveying company convinced me to try it for a year after high school. Almost 40 years later, I don’t regret that decision.

We are pleased to bring you a course entitled "UAS Photogrammetry” This course is presented by Joe Paiva, PhD, PS, PE.

Course Description:
In this course, the concepts of close-range photogrammetry and vision software are introduced as they are used in UAS. The subject of calibration is discussed. We begin with a discussion of camera features that are critical to UAS operation. The differences between “conventional” aerial photogrammetry and UAS photogrammetry are covered. The workflow in which UAS imagery is used to create an automatic aerial triangulation process (AAT) that leads to a bundle block adjustment (BBA) is then presented. The process of generating feature or match points in overlapping images from 75% or more overlapping imagery is outlined. These points are matched up at the rate of hundreds or even thousands of points per image. Using least squares techniques, camera position, which is measured in flight to the level of meters, and pitch, roll, and yaw, measured in the 1° to 2° range are then refined to levels of centimeters and arc-seconds. The prime purpose of the onboard measurements is to provide an initial estimation for the camera position and orientation values. This calculation also generates the interior orientation of the camera (calibration). The course concludes with some operational examples and examples of projects and data products that can be accomplished.
