On this day in 1925, the Lenape, a steam passenger ship of the Clyde Steamship Company, caught fire off Cape Henlopen outside the Delaware Bay entrance. The Lenape’s captain steered the vessel toward the bay entrance where Lewes pilot Charles H. Morris boarded the ship and steered it into the Delaware Bay and ran it aground near Lewes. Coast guard and pilot vessels from Lewes rescued all of 370 passengers and crew except for one who jumped overboard and drowned. Once on shore in Lewes, the survivors were sheltered and cared for by the people and doctors of Lewes. Special trains later were sent to Lewes to take the survivors to their destinations. The burned hulk of the Lenape was later scrapped.

VISUAL VACATION: Stillness by Cary Tucker

“On this day, during a visit to the Ritter farm south of Harbeson, with the after-noon transitioning into early evening, I was taking pictures of the newly bloomed sunflowers with my friend Kathryn. As we were getting ready to leave, the sun was setting and sending golden sunlight through the trees, creating a calm and peaceful stillness. I wanted to capture this moment, so I asked Kathryn to lightly touch a sunflower and I shot the photograph as the sun lit the top of her hat, creating a splash of sun rays.”

This image won honorable mention in the scenic category of the 2024 Delaware Beach Life Photography Contest and was voted the favorite honorable mention image by those who took part in our online poll. See pages 74-81 for other winners in the Winter issue!

Congratulations to our newest members of the Kids Cottage family! Miss Lindsay gave birth to her twins on November 4th. Sadie weighs 7 lbs. 13 oz. and Banks weighs 5 lbs. 6 oz. Mama and the babies are doing great!
