Beautiful Landscapes # Historical Content # Fun Adventures Lewis & Clark, and the River of No Return Wilderness Tour.
This Summer: July 08-17 ~ odytours.net
DAY ONE & TWO: Chasing L&C in Montana. Imagine your first-night on top of a hill watching premier rivers -the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin meandering circuitously before eventually departing united as the Missouri River. You look off into the distance towards the Jefferson River, to a level plain where the Corps camped and Sacajawea (Sacagawea) recognized as the area she had been abducted from during a Minataree raid and carried away to North Dakota. (Her girlfriend escaped en route and fled home.) Tomorrow you will stand at Fortunate Camp where they reunited. Typically unemotional, Lewis noted, "emotions were quite affecting." Looking at the tall grasses and big beaver ponds, you envision 1808, when members John Potts and John Colter returned with the Missouri Fur Company. Potts lost his life and Colter was stripped naked by the Blackfeet and told to run. George Drewyer also lost his life here two more years later in 1810, again at the hands of the Blackfeet. You gather in a circle of chairs near the sounds of the Jefferson River as Colter returns from the past to explain to you his great escape. Tonight as the sun sets and the moon rises Allen Pinkham great, great, grandnephew of Chief Joseph, and descendant of Red Bear (mentioned in the Journals) will recite to you the Creation Story of the Nez Perce. On your last tour day, we'll take you to its birthmark "the Heart of the Monster." Learn more by visiting our website, or come join us on location - lots more fun!

Can't wait to see this. Many of my friends were involved in its creation. Then next July 7, 2019, Odyssey's summer tour - Lewis & Clark, and the River of No Return begins by taking you inside the L&C journals on location in Sacajawea's homeland near Dillon, MT, over Lemhi Pass, and on into Salmon Idaho where you will enjoy an evening with the Lemhi-Shoshone. You will hear music by a descendant of Chief Tendoy, learn about the Lemhi-Shoshone people (Sacajawea's home tribe) and enjoy a traditional dinner, music, and dancing prepared by descendants of Chief Camehwait (Sacajawea's brother). There are many spellings and pronunciations for her name. Sacajawea is how the people of Idaho like to see and pronounce her name. Many scholars of the L&C journals believe it was pronounced Sa-ca-ga-wea. Lewis wrote this in his journal. I lean towards the prior. - well because I am from Idaho, my kids went to Sacajawea schools, and our friend Rose Anne Abrahamson (who teaches 7 languages) has a pretty convincing argument on the pronunciation of her great aunt's name. The fun and the debates continue. ... then on to a six-day river float into the River of No Return Wilderness Area, upon take-out you arrive Nez Perce country and explore the L&C journals on location with our Nez Perce gentleman friend Allen Pinkham (a descendant of Red Bear in the L&C journals). It is great to read the stories on location and also hear the Native American oral history handed down also. Too much fun! We want all of you to come! Please let me know if you have an interest. Hoping to complete ALL the details this week. In the meantime ~ excited to watch this film! ~ enjoy!

It is my great pleasure and humbled joy to present to you one of the most spectacular concept-art pieces I have ever seen. To have a beautiful depiction, such as this, representing Sacajawea to the world, is all I've ever hoped for. Marcia K Moore has taken the story of Sacajawea and captured the essence of the journey in one powerfully emotional vision.

Ladies and gentlemen, here is the official poster of SACAJAWEA, The Windcatcher. Please tell us how you feel about it and share it with your friends! Then visit our new website and fill out the contact form to be added to our exclusive list. We want to keep you updated on everything we're doing because things are absolutely heating up! Get involved, stay connected and be a part of this journey with us. This is going to be the ride of a lifetime! ONWARD!

Just a quick note to alert you to the American Experience documentary "Into the Amazon" that airs this week, January 9th, 10th and 11th on PBS, about Theodore Roosevelt and the River of Doubt. It has our very own friend, and humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson onboard as one of their premier "talking heads". Clay mentioned he interviewed for it in Chicago two years ago and one never knows what gets included and what winds up on the cutting room floor. If you know Clay's scholarship like we do, this "no doubt" will be grand! Hope you enjoy~ Here is a peek at one of the trailers: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/into-the-amazon/

The Lewis & Clark trail begins at Monticello and ends at the mouth of the Columbia. But the best part of the whole transcontinental trail lies between the confluence of the Judith and Missouri Rivers.

Pretty cool!

Just had to share this Monticello-inspired entry by Wiley|Wilson for Canstruction Lynchburg, a city-based competition in which design industry professionals compete building structures made out of full cans of food that go to feed the hungry. The Lynchburg competition will benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

That phrase, written by environmentalist and writer Barry Lopez, has resonance for today's readers of John Steinbeck. Lopez urges us to consider two primal landscapes: external landscapes - our relations to the land, to oaks, to the whir of night frogs - and interior landscapes, often shaped by the…

Clay Jenkinson writes, "I'm so eager to sit down as Steinbeck to be questioned by Russ Eagle, without any advance questions, on the role of the artist/novelist in a free society. Given the current move to eliminate our national cultural agencies, such conversations become more and more important. Join us in central California (Monterey, Salinas) 4-10 March to make sure the humanities remain central to our lives."

The monument spans 149 miles and contains a spectacular array of biological, geological, and historical points of interest. For our Bernard DeVoto fans: "The mountain men were a tough race, as many selective breeds of Americans have had to be; their courage, skill, and mastery of the conditions of their chosen life were absolute or they would not have been here. Nor would they have been here if they had not responded to the loveliness of the country and found in their way of life something precious beyond safety, gain, comfort, and family life.

NEW development: Come unwind; unplug; get refreshed; this January; Lochsa Lodge Winter Retreat "Books of the Road" with Clay Jenkinson; Jan 16-21; (Deposit is refundable until Labor Day)

"Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion area fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.”

John Steinbeck
Travels with Charley

A note from Clay:

"Our broad theme is Books of the Road. You’ll spend four days exploring Homer’s Odyssey, Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, and two by John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley, and The Grapes of Wrath. You’ll read the Odyssey in Richmond Lattimore’s superb translation.

I’ve spent much of my life on the road, one way or another. Nothing delights me more than a loopy auto trip through backcountry with no firm destination in mind, and enough leisure for pointless digressions, side trips, detours, and hiking opportunities. My dream is to buy a compact RV and travel America with cameras, an audio recording device, and a laptop, visiting National Parks, literary shrines, historic sites, and windswept improbable landscapes. I’d write a blog and newspaper articles, plus work on a book, and a series of photo essays. I’d follow Steinbeck’s travels to a certain extent, and Lewis and Clark’s, but I would not lock myself into a journey of imitation.

I’m particularly interested in how long journeys end—whether the traveler has found himself or created a new self, found America (since we all seem to be searching for it), found God, or just turned up at home, like Odysseus, older, a little broken, but ready to resume the previous life.

We’ll do a little journeying ourselves from our base at the marvelous Lochsa Lodge. We’ll sit around a big open fire overlooking the Lochsa River and tell our own journey stories. We may watch such movies as Easy Rider or Martin Sheen’s The Way, and of course we will certainly wind up talking about Lewis & Clark."

Come join the fun! The group is a small group of around 20; we usually have the lodge and the serenity to ourselves. A few seats remain! .... bek
