ONLINE CHECK-IN

Everyone likes the chance to skip the check-in lines at the airport and go straight to security, right?

BUT! There are a few reasons why you may be denied online check-in:

The airline needs to verify your passport and visa where applicable.

Another reason online check-in can be denied is due to Basic Economy tickets. The reason they do this, at least for United, is to make sure you're not carrying a full sized carry-on with you, which is not allowed in BE Class.

The third reason is simply that the online check-in function just doesn't work.

Passport check at the gate:

When this happens, you will be called up to the podium at the gate BEFORE boarding so be sure to keep this in mind so that you're not slowing everything down.

Asa precaution: ALWAYS be within range of your gate within the last 30mins before boarding time (not departure time) just in case you are called and need to take care of anything.

TOURS & GUIDES

Wherever you travel and decide you don't want to be the one having to figure out how to get around the craziness of Ho Chi Minh City or find your way across the Kenyan savannah on your own, you need a private guide or a tour.

But which one is better?

Well, that depends on what you're looking for PLUS what is available in terms of group tours. Some places have tons of options and others have only one or two that sell out months in advance due to their popularity and remoteness in the world.

A private guide is always a great option, as you're bound to make a new friend and can have that special experience as we have had on many of our adventures.

A group tour is great too, but think about the size of the group and how you really feel about anything larger than a group of say ten people. While these are perfectly fine for us, others prefer smaller or larger groups to socialize with (or not).

With both, you need to be aware of what's included such as entrance fees and any transportation involved like riding the metro or taking a taxi. Not all group tours pick you up from YOUR hotel but one that's central, so keep this in mind as well!

We do check on reviews for both options so that you're not meeting up with someone who's not so experienced as they say or with a tour group that doesn't have a great reputation (and a history of changing their name every few months).

TRAVEL & FOOD:

Everyone has their favorite food and some of us are picky to where we don't want anything new or local for that reason or, we may worry that a new combination may not digest so well and that is a nightmare for any traveler!

So, to avoid risking you guys passing food from your digestive system and into the 4th dimension at the speed of light, we have a few guidelines to follow.

Tourist Traps: AKA, the best place to get food that tastes like earlobe meat!

These are easy to spot, you won't see locals here and there is always someone out front trying to lure you in with "happy hour" or some other nonsense. A menu in English will often net you a higher price, as will that "free" water and bread they just brought out. Know that dining-in and take-away in Europe are always two different prices, dining-in being more expensive. We've all caved to these spots before, especially for our picky eaters, and there's nothing really wrong with that. However, always shop around first and see what the local places have to offer that you may like at a price that isn't so jacked up.

Street Food: SNAIL SOUP! SNAIL SOUP! SOFT, WARM & WELL-COOKED!

First of all, NEVER eat shellfish that has been sitting out in the desert heat. Second, not all street food will send you to the toilet and is actually quite good! The best thing to do is ask a local friend or guide, but also follow these basic rules: Fresh-cooked and served hot, don't eat the skin of fruits or veggies, beware of ice & fresh fruit drinks, and as always be on the lookout for cleanliness! Out of an overabundance of caution, we personally never eat street food from anywhere and will not be able to provide you with any picks on this front and will always refer you to a local guide.

Local Eats: It's always better from their kitchen!

Y'all ought to know by now, but this is the way to go! There's NOTHING like breakfast at an authentic Parisian cafe, lunch at an Italian bistro or dinner at an Ozzy BBQ in the Outback! If we have a favorite among these or know a good group tour experience that has REALLY good food, we'll be sure to suggest this for you!

Hello, Travelers!

Just a quick post here-

My son will be doing a short video series about our own travels, intending to show kids and adults who aren't able to go to these places, what it's like and interesting information about each place we travel to.

Each video will be under 5 minutes and for trips with flights, he'll also be talking about the airline, aircraft and anything interesting you can see from that particular flight.

A proper page and channel will be available once the first adventure is completed at the end of June.

1. Dinosaurs of Connecticut, New England Lighthouses, Cape Cod and Acadia National Park.
2. The Carolina Coast.
3. Alaska.
4. The Deep South, Vicksburg & New Orleans.
5. Thailand.
6. Laos.
7. Vietnam.
8. Cambodia.
9. ???

Each marked episode will have a varying number of 5min videos covering each day of the adventure.

"$32 a night?? No no no, there must be something wrong with it, I'm booking this one. It's more expensive but it's worth it."

Not so fast, Betty Lou!

Let's talk about hotels, booking them and this new wave of AI that's plaguing the world of...well, everything.

The hotel on the left side, is the real deal. The photos are authentic, but with such a low price you may wonder if everything's legit. This is actually a hotel we've used and it was SPECTACULAR! Breakfast was included and an airport shuttle was offered as well in a nice 4-door sedan.

The hotel on the right side, if you can call it that, is an actual active listing with the price over $100 a night. This is an ACUTAL picture taken by a guest who was duped by the use of AI imagery to make it look the complete opposite of what it really is- a dump.

So, how can you as a traveler w**d out the real vs. the fake vs. the AI when it comes to pictures, reviews and everything in between?

Let's start with reviews: STOP looking at ONLY the 5 and 1 star reviews!

A happy tourist will give anything five stars and an angry one will give a one star for the slightest inconvenience that is usually self-inflicted. Instead, look at the ratings in between where you'll find the realistic reviews by real people.

You should also look at the reviews on all of the sites where the hotel is listed, rather than just TripAdvisor (where anyone can leave a review) or Booking (confirmed guest-only reviews). Even if you don't use things like Priceline, Trivago, etc. it is still a very good idea to comb through those if you are not 100% sure on what you're getting into.

By doing this, you can also see all of the photos taken by guests and the fake ones will begin to stand out more and more. After all, why would someone who left a review on TripAdvisor feel the need to use the same images, text and rating on every site that doesn't require a confirmed stay? Because that property gets a huge rating boost from that review, which then rockets it to the top of the "Recommended for you!" column.

If you're booking with us, don't worry! We do all of the background checks on this stuff for you so that you don't end up paying $100 a night for a crack house when you can stay at a crack-free palace instead for $32 a night!

"Is 30 minutes enough time for a transfer?"

NO!

While some airports, such as the tiny ones you'd find in a field in Kansas are easy to navigate. 30 minutes is NOT enough time to transfer safely, here's why:

-Your flight may land a few minutes late and on average, it takes people about 20mins to disembark when they're not moving at a snail's pace.

-Your arrival time is NOT when you arrive at the gate! You may land at 6:04pm, but your gate arrival can depend on a medley of factors. If going straight to the gate, you'll be there in 5-10mins but if you have to wait for a spot, be ready for 20 or more!

-Your arrival gate and the next gate you need for departure could be in two different terminals! Walking times could be 5-25mins depending on the airport and some are HUGE.

-Depending on the airport, you may even have to exit the terminal and go back through security again to continue! This hit us at LAX, but we had a 3hr layover.

We suggest at a bare minimum ONE HOUR. This changes based on what airport you're flying into, the airline you're with (some always have a delay period), what time you land and if you have to transfer from domestic to international or vice-versa.

Play it safe, plan it wise, we're here to help you guys!

Okay, travelers!

We get a lot of questions about those cheaper fares with budget airlines like Spirit and Frontier, we also get asked about some horror stories you may hear about.

Thing is, you only ever hear the worst parts and rarely a glowing review will be posted that isn't a bot. But good or bad reviews from real people are something to consider when choosing an airliner.

First note- that low fare never includes ANYTHING extra such as seat choice and bags of any kind, so $58 is your bare fare.

Sometimes, you CAN use these guys to get where you wanna go without doing any stops and for cheaper than the others that typically include your preferred perks. It all depends on your trip and how you want your flight experience to be.

The point here is- we do not have anything against Spirit or Frontier and do use them as we find suitable. We've never had any issues, other than a delay or two by 30mins or less.

Air Asia, EasyJet, WizzAir are just a few that we've used as well and they've all gotten the job done, some even better than the competition!

As a passenger, just be aware that sometimes not everything is included and can come at a high price. We're always watching fares and do consider these extras, so please don't freak out when we suggest one of these airlines to you (you can always elect to take the next option, it's no trouble!)

Hey Travelers!

Lots of first-time flyers are getting itineraries with us this year and we wanted to go over a few key factors for a smooth flight for you, as well as anyone who books with us in the future.

Before Your Trip:

-Make sure that your bag(s) measure and weigh within the limits provided for personal items, carry-ons and checked bags! You can face BIG fees and be forced to check your carry-on item if it is too heavy or too large, especially those traveling in Basic Economy. Don't think you can check-in online and breeze through with a BE ticket and a 50lb carry-on the size of a kangaroo, you WILL be eyed over and there WILL be consequences! So, talk to us about getting those bag fees down where possible and avoid going through any craziness!

-Familiarize yourself for what is and isn't allowed in your bags for the plane, both carry-on and checked (as rules are different) as well as any restrictions on medicine for your destination country. Be sure to have a copy of your prescription AND a letter from your pharmacist just in case!

For the Airport:

-Place all of your liquids that are over 3.4 ounces in your checked bag and be sure they're sealed in their containers, as well as in a clear plastic bag just in case of any leaks!

-For carry-ons, the limit is 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per item. All liquids must fit in a single, clear, quart-sized bag, and passengers are only allowed one bag for this.

-Arrive at the airport three hours prior to your flight. Some say two for international and 90mins for domestic, we do NOT advise that for most airports due to the size, wait times and other factors that can end with you rushing through the airport to find your gate, skipping out on a meal you desperately need and potentially missing your flight.

-Some airlines have kiosks that you can use to check-in and print your bag tags, such as United. Use these to speed up the process and be ready to either scan your passport or input your booking reference number to start the process. If you have a bag to check, you'll receive that tag at the kiosk and will take it to "BAG DROP". You should also receive your boarding pass at the kiosk but if not, see an agent at the desk. Once you've dropped your bag and have your boarding pass, you are ready to proceed to security!

At Security/Passport Control:

-Shoes come OFF for everyone above 12 and under 75 traveling within, out of or into the USA! Put them in the bin and EMPTY your pockets. Place your cell phone and passport inside your personal item BEFORE entering the security line.

-Parents with childen under 13 will be directed to the generic walk-through metal detector, everyone else will pass through the other lane. Stand and face the image of the man on the wall and put your hands above your head as directed. Exit, wait for the okay and then proceed to collect your items from the bin as it comes out.

-Don't clog the path as you wait for your items. Remove your things from the bin and place it on the nearby stack. Take your shoes away from the area and put them on off to the side in order to keep things moving.

-Passport control will usually happen before security, it depends on the airport and what your destination is especially if traveling from Europe to another destination on the continent. Wait in line and PAY ATTENTION to the next available agent! Present your passport and know where you are heading to. You may also be asked a variety of questions about your trip, answer these honestly and you'll be on your way. Not every place will give you a stamp and some places issue you a card to hold onto while your were in the country, we will assist you with understanding that whole process if you're going to a place where that will happen.

-Check your boarding pass! Your gate should be listed and if it isn't, check out the monitors to see if it has been updated. Sometimes these are the last to update and so the apps used by the airlines are extremely handy to have! Also note your airline and what gates the other flights are departing from, such as all United leaving from A-gates or Thai Airways leaving from Y-gates and assume that your flight will likely be leaving from this area as well. We'll check in advance for you to make sure there are no weird changes for departure gates, which can sometimes happen for a variety of reasons like airport construction.

Boarding:

-Every passenger has a Group Number or Letter, remain seated or out of the way until your group is called to avoid a congested mess that makes the boarding take a lot longer.

-For domestic flights: Present ONLY your boarding pass to the gate agent.

-For international flights: Present BOTH your boarding pass AND passport to the gate agent.

-Sometimes an announcement will be made that they are checking carry-ons for free, this means that there is limited overhead space and you may not get your bag overhead. We strongly advise you to take this offer and you will be able to reclaim your carry-on at the GATE of your destination rather than baggage claim. Note that your checked bag from earlier will go directly to baggage claim, still.

Welcome Aboard!:

-Locate your seat letter and number (C-15), understand that A is always at the window on your right (looking down the plane). So if there are three seats on each side of the plane, the lettering is ABC, aisle, DEF. Larger planes can have 3-4-3, 2-3-2 or even 3-5-3 arrangements and if on a larger aircraft, you will want to cross to the other side of the plane as soon as you board for seats HJK. We'll help you understand this better based on your flight!

-Put your carry-on ABOVE you and your personal item UNDER THE SEAT in front of you, then have a seat. DO NOT buckle your seatbelt until your row is filled or the boarding is completed. Please stay seated and refrain from rummaging through your carry-on or personal item, as it delays boarding and take-off. Leave your laptop and electronics alone until cruising altitude is reached and you are notified that these items can be used. At no point should you be standing or moving around when the overhead seatbelt sign is on!

-Follow the safety instructions provided by the crew or video and enjoy your flight! Cabin servie begins in the first hour of the flight depending on aircraft size and can take a bit to get to you, so if you need to use the toilet it's a good idea to do so before the trolleys are in the aisles. Onboard toilets have indicator lights as to whether or not they're both occupied, please don't crowd the aisle with a massive line to use them.

-Roughly 40mins before arriving you'll get an announcement and the seatbelt sign will come on, so stow your items and treat this the same way as take off. Keep your tray table up, window shade open and seat fully upright.

-You'll deplane by row, so sit and wait until your turn comes up!

Customs and Border Protection:

-Passport control is the same as when you left your origin, so you may get a few questions. Different places have different methods, such as a camera to take your photo and fingerprinting, we'll guide you through that as needed.

-Collect your bags from the baggage claim and BE SURE they're actually YOUR bags, as not everyone has a unique color or shape.

-If you have anything to declare in ANY of your bags such as your prescription medicine, you MUST declare it! If you are ever unsure about something, declare it! If you go through the "Nothing to Delcare" line and are found to have something you shouldn't, you WILL face penalty. Always declare when you are unsure! This applies also to seashells, vials of sand, fruits, meats and live plants among other things. Many airports use x-ray devices upon your exit to ensure you are following the law.

-Exit to the terminal and continue your journey!

IMPORTANT:

Travelers, we have gotten many requests in the past few days and taken on many new clients and itineraries going all over the world.

PLEASE make sure that you have a US Passport that is valid SIX MONTHS past the date of your intended arrival for destinations or you may be refused entry into your destination country!

Domestic flyers- You must have REAL ID or a US Passport to travel! Some states have already begun this requirement and others are starting on it now. In most cases, you can obtain the REAL ID through your local DMV. For US Passports, this varies depending on your location and we can assist you with figuring that out along with what you need for the process.

EUROPE-bound travelers- The EU will begin a visa-waiver program in May 2025 that will REQUIRE you to apply for and obtain it in order to enter most of Europe! We'll assist you with this process as needed.

Many destinations in the world, such as Laos, do require you to obtain a VISA prior to arrival in the country of choice. Please be aware of this, as the prices for these can be higher than what you expected to pay. Other countries, like Egypt, have you take care of this upon arrival and pay the fee on-site. We are familiar with all of these and will explain the process to you in full detail so that you don't find yourself in the wrong line for over an hour, just to have to move to the correct one and wait for another hour.

In the US, $120 is usually how much your cost is per-night (which is ridiculous).

$120 total for a hotel in Laos as you see here, our personal choice for our upcoming stay, covers THREE nights in a Hilton-style hotel.

Southeast Asia may have a higher flight price tag at around $980 roundtrip, but hotels, food and transportation are much lower than what you'd see in Australia or the United Kingdom.

Consider visiting Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand or Myanmar for your next international adventure, you won't be disappointed!

Before we planned out going to Hawaii, I checked in with a travel agency here in Virginia just to see how expensive they’d make it compared to what I could do for myself. You can see here the result and the EXTREME difference. Now, I did not factor in a full tank of gas into their total but you can figure that up on your own if interested.

The next time you consider going somewhere, consider booking your trip with my assistance. It’s a $75 fee that covers almost every aspect of planning (I don’t plan your meals, you know what you like and can check reviews for places that have a preferred menu.) My goal is to help people travel without spending a fortune, because it IS possible to do!

If you wanna fly somewhere, please get in touch with me at least 5 months in advance of the departure if you can so that I can find the best options for you. Popular destinations like Paris and the beaches of our east coast book out well in advance and while I can work some travel magic, I’m not a wizard and can’t create availability in a sold out hotel/city.
