Another life lesson:
I am once again reminded of how dependent we are on technology and how the media manipulates a situation. All flights from Florence Friday evening were canceled due to the Microsoft shutdown as with most airports in Europe. The internet was interrupted. Saturday, literally 10 hours with minimal internet and cell service to get the Paris to Houston flight rebooked. Expedia and Google Flights show plenty of availability until you attempt to book. Unless you are literally booking a flight or train between Saturday and Tuesday, it isn’t available and what has been sold is at a PREMIUM price. I managed to book as the primary traveler (myself) on United then to book Reece’s flight as a minor. Several attempts of payment for hers failed. After calling United the agent advised the flight is OVERbooked. “Would you like to cancel your ticket?” I was dumbfounded but in a pleasant tone “yes please with a full refund”. Why in this decade are flights oversold? Maybe Microsoft can fix that issue as well. I have visited with numerous people affected by this. Will Microsoft pay the expenses incurred by travelers? Doubtful.
We are close enough to the airport to see flights are occurring which is great. Our flights were rebooked by the airline for Tuesday and at original cost which is a third of what they were charging on Saturday. Until then, we will enjoy Italy in the evenings to share with you.
