As the king tides return Jan. 11-13, remember that jetties are never safe places to be, especially when the sea is high.

King tides are the highest tides of the year, occurring each fall/winter when the moon and sun align to put the greatest gravitational pull on the earth. The final round of king tides hits the Oregon and Washington coasts this weekend, Jan. 11-13.

Consider this an ideal time to stay off jetties. Here are a few additional tips to keep you safe if you plan to try and get a look at these impressive tides:

-- Stay up high and out of harm’s way.
-- Never turn your back on the ocean.
-- Stay off logs and other debris.
-- Don’t go in the water.
-- Check the tide tables. You can find Oregon coast tide predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration here: tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/tide_predictions.html?gid=1409

Wondering where to go for Whale Watch Week? Lincoln City has no volunteers for the event, but closest spots are short drive to Depoe Bay

Trained volunteers at "Oregon Whale Watch" sites help visitors spot gray whales during the winter and spring annual migrations. The volunteers are on duty 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to help visitors see the marine animals and offer information about their migration. Visit www.stateparks.oregon.gov

Since the turn of the millennium in 2000, hand-made glass floats have been hidden along the beaches of Lincoln City as part of this iconic scavenger hunt, inspired by the glass fishing floats commonly found here in the past. Over the years, it’s become a beloved tradition and a defining part of Lincoln City’s charm.

We’ll kick the year off during opening weekend, January 3–5, with a special drop of 100 glass floats—the best odds of the entire year to snag one!

The National Weather Service has issued a a high surf advisory through 10 PM Monday. A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches, producing rip currents, sneaker waves and beach erosion.

Stay well back from the water's edge and be alert for exceptionally high waves. Keep away from large logs on the beach. Water running up on the beach can easily lift or roll logs which can injure or kill someone caught in their path.
