It has been many years since the iconic Tropics restaurant sign has been a-glow over the horizon of Route 66 in Lincoln, Illinois. Now, four years after being taken down, the sign has been restored, re-lit, and has a permanent home just feet from where it stood since 1956. So happy to see this sign a-glow once again and given new life for many years to come 😀
A special thanks to all those involved!

Honest Abe's First Glow - 11-19-2017
Honest Abe's First Glow - 11-19-2017 (Video)
Lincoln Mayor Seth Goodman previewed his new balloon, Honest Abe, last night to a small gathering of curious onlookers in the balloon's namesake town of Lincoln, Illinois. So what's the story with the unique Abraham Lincoln/Watermelon design scheme of the balloon?...continue reading to find out :-D
The connection between Lincoln, watermelons, and Lincoln culminated on August 27th, 1853 in Lincoln, Illinois. A sale of lots was happening for a new town formed along the newly established railroad. The town proprietors asked their friend, lawyer, and regular to the area, Abraham Lincoln, to name and christen this new town of Lincoln in his honor. Lincoln obliged and cut open a nearby watermelon and squeezed the juice into a cup. With the watermelon juice in hand, he poured it on the ground and christened the new town of Lincoln. Lincoln's namesake city of Lincoln, Illinois stayed connected with Lincoln through his life and after his death laying claim to being the only city named for and christened by Abraham Lincoln before he became famous. A watermelon marker located at Chicago & Broadway streets commemorates this event and the connection with Abraham Lincoln.

The Crossroads Motel in Lincoln is no more...
The Crossroads Motel in Lincoln was a Route 66 era motel that has been demolished today. The motel served Route 66 travelers as part of the "four corners" intersection where The Tropics, Heritage/Blue Inn and various fuel & service stations served as a popular stop on the western edge of Lincoln before the days of I-55. For many years, the Crossroads has fallen into disrepair and was recently closed. We have no word on what the plan is for the property.
