Light Goose Conservation Order season opens on Feb. 12, 2024, and ends on March 31, 2024. During this time, Indiana hunters can harvest snow and Ross’ geese (white and blue phases of both species). All you need is a hunting license, an Indiana waterfowl stamp, and a special free permit (available online or at Fish & Wildlife Areas). Neither a HIP number nor a federal waterfowl stamp is required to participate. Find more info and regulations here: https://bit.ly/LGCOPermits

The first Light Goose Conservation Order was issued in 1999 in response to damaged Arctic breeding grounds. The Light Goose Conservation Order was instituted to conserve the tundra habitat and is still in place today.

DNR requests that hunters report any banded geese that are harvested to the North American Bird Banding Program through this link: www.reportband.gov/

Total Solar Eclipse: The total solar eclipse is seven months away (April 8, 2024) and if you are someone lucky enough to live in the path of totality, you should thank your lucky stars.

Traffic across the state is going to be difficult. Very difficult. So, if you are planning to visit a DNR property that day, we ask that you do so prepared.

In 2017, the path of totality arced across Kentucky and afterwards, traffic was at a standstill for hours across the state. So, please fill up the tank, bring snacks and water, necessary medication, and be patient. This is a historical event and with it will bring historical traffic.

We are very excited for the total solar eclipse in 2024. Planning started over two years ago in anticipation for the event. We hope you’re excited, too. If you are interested in learning more about the total solar eclipse and seeing the path of totality, please visit:

As the temperatures increase, so do the number of inquiries we get about young “abandoned” wildlife.

When people see young animals alone, it is often assumed that the animal is sick or orphaned. If you’re a person who worries when they see young animals alone, we get it! However, it’s important to remember that parents of wildlife rarely abandon their babies, but they will leave them unattended for hours at a time. Although well intentioned, trying to help the animal may do more damage than good.

This time of year is also a very busy time for wildlife rehabilitators, so it’s important to think through what you know before taking action. Ask yourself:

- Has sufficient time passed without an adult animal nearby? (The adult animal will not return with a person nearby.)
- Does the animal really need help? Most young animals that seem abandoned do NOT need help.
- Did I witness the adult animal get killed?
- Does the animal have obvious signs of disease or injury?
- Will I help or harm this animal?

You should contact a permitted wildlife rehabilitator only if you witness the parents become hurt, if the babies are noticeably injured or sick, or if you haven’t seen the parents in multiple days. Remember, it is against the law to possess a wild animal without a permit.

I’ve struggled with posting this for several days. On March 23 my precious, beautiful wife who was also my partner in crime with the daily management of Goose Pond Cabin Rental’s went home to Jesus, her Lord and Savior due.Anyone that had dealt with Alice when booking a cabin or dealing with a issue always had nothing but praise for how she handled things. Alice was a devoted wife, mother to two beautiful daughters and GRAMMY of 5 fantastic Grandsugars. I was allowed to spend 51 years of love with her. Through ups and downs she was always right there. She loved dealing with guests. She had a fantastic outlook on life. I miss her dearly. We are working through some changes here but business will go on and prosper. She would expect nothing less. The outpouring of love during her celebration of life by family, friends and clients was phenomenal, thank you all. Bear with us during the days ahead. The next several months is a very busy time for us, it helps to stay busy during this time. God Bless each and everyone of you for your love, friendship and support. I loved her dearly.
