The first set of clients this year started it with a bang. One lucky gentlemen got to take himself a beautiful Wisconsin harvested drake surf scoter. this bird will be heading to the taxidermist. The marsh has been treating us well. 6 man limit to kick off the southern zone opener. Bringing in a nice drake green wing an a lucinistic/grey mallard. Few other piles were had after opener. Netah has been working her butt off keeping up with all the birds.

Only a few more weeks until we can get the layouts in the water. We snuck out for some early teal and a little field work. 4 hunts bringing in 75 ducks to start the season out.

This year is looking to be another great year. Still some open dates left for 23 layout season.

Hand loading can give you some of the best satisfaction that you didn’t know you were missing. Taking those skills I’ve developed from lessons in the workshop with my grandfather working with lead loads to now working with the modern technology we have at our disposal.

Many people will initially take the defensive “decoy your bird better and you don’t need that”. We are typically hunting some of the hardest ducks to kill. We are not looking to shoot 100 yards out. When your in 3 foot chop and chasing a diving duck it is not the same as your crippled hen mallard in a pond. The last thing I want is to loose a crippled bird.

This load I’ve developed for our trip to St. Paul Alaska and layout hunting for seaducks in general. It’s a slight varrient from my standard layout load which uses a duplex of #5 steel to open the pattern up and use as filler in the wad.

This load was developed to be fast, spread out but maintain pattern at long distance, and cause as little damage to the birds and feathers as possible. After a month of testing I’m happy with my results at this point.

The final morning of the 2022 open water season. Battling ice for weeks and the 3:00am wake up calls have made this one of the toughest seasons to date. The birds decided they would finally giv it up this morning. Perfect morning the call it an end…until next year!

Layout season is coming up fast. I have the feeling this year will turn out to be a great year. We have some prime open dates left over for divers and sea ducks.
