6TH GRADE OPEN HOUSE INFO

6th grade open house is August 5th from 4 till 7 pm. Mrs. Bishop will address students and parents in the auditorium at 4 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm. All 6th grade parents should try to attend one of these sessions. You will have the opportunity to tour the school and meet your student's teachers immediately after.

While at open house, you will have the opportunity to turn in 6th physicals, immunization certificates and sign up for parent portal.

Please be aware of changes to the traffic flow on the South Laurel Campus. This involves both South Laurel High School and South Laurel Middle School.

Please note that middle school students who ride home with a high school sibling may enter the high school upon dismissal. However, no high school students are permitted to be dropped off at the middle school in the morning nor may they be picked up at the middle school in the evening. No high school students will be permitted in the middle school building after school.

2023 - 2024 Yearbooks have arrived!

Last year's 8th graders will be able to get their preordered year book at freshman orientation. All others will be able to pick up year books at SLMS Open House on Aug 6th from 4 till 7.

UPDATED WITH CORRECTED TIMES/DAYS FOR CHEER

UPDATES FOR GIRLS BASKETBALL, CHEER AND DANCE TRYOUTS FOR 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR

Girls basketball tryouts will be held at SLHS gym beginning today, May 14th. Current 6th and 7th graders tryout time will be 3:30 till 5, 5th graders will be 5 till 6:30.

Cheer tryouts will be May 15th and 16th at 6 and May 17th at 5:30 at Sublimity Elem.

Dance tryouts will be May 13th thru the 17th at SLHS/SLMS auditorium from 3:45 till 5.

All student athletes must have a current sports physical in order to participate. As always, keep a copy of the physical for yourself if you turn in a paper one. All athletic departments will be using Final Forms as a way submit physicals in the future. The link to access Final Forms is https://laurelcounty-ky.finalforms.com/ Final Forms will make your athlete's physical available to all coaches were they to try out for multiple sports as long as the physical is current and not expired.

YEAR BOOK UPDATE

Below is a letter our year book staff received yesterday from Balfour, the company that prints and ships our year books.

You are receiving this message because your Yearbook has
been affected by unforeseen manufacturing delays, causing
your books to be delivered after their originally scheduled dates.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration
this has caused.
We want you to know we are working hard to produce your
books quickly and with great quality. In the meantime, we are
working with your Yearbook Adviser on how to work through this
challenging situation and move forward.
We want to acknowledge that these delays are not the fault of
your Yearbook Adviser, Staff, or Sales Representative. They have
worked diligently throughout the year, and your school should
be proud of the work they have put into creating this
publication.

Once we know when the yearbooks will be in, we will set up a pick up day. Everyone will be notified by one call and we will post it here. If you are unable to collect them on the pick up day, you will be able to call the school after July 22nd and set up a pick up time/day. They will also be available for pick up during open houses.

SLMS Site Based Decision Making Council
Nominations and Elections
South Laurel Middle School is currently accepting nominations for two (2) parent representatives to serve one year on the Site Based Decision Making Council for the 2024-2025 school year. Any parent that has a child attending SLMS during the 2024-2025 school year is eligible for nomination. The definition of “parent” has been expanded to by KRS 160.345 to include parents, stepparents, foster parents or persons having legal custody of a student. A parent representative cannot be an employee or a relative of an employee in the district administrative offices or at SLMS. Also, the parent representative cannot be a local school board member or their spouse.

SBDM representatives are required to attend a training session (six hours for a new member, three hours for an experienced member) and monthly meetings.

If you would like to nominate a candidate for the SBDM council, please email [email protected] with the following information: Nominee's name, contact phone number and their student's name.

Elections will take place at SLMS between the hours of 8 am and 3 pm May 15th thru the 17th.

SLMS 8th Grade Dance Saturday, April 27th, 6 - 9 pm

* doors will open promptly at 6 pm
* drop off and pick up will be just like drop off and pick up during a regular school day
* if you want to pick up your student prior to dismissal at 9 pm, you will have to come into the front office and check out with ID
* students will not be permitted to walk surrounding businesses after the dance
* tickets were sold at school and will not be sold at the door
* only SLMS students are permitted to attend
* dances are closed events, only students, staff and approved volunteers will be permitted inside the building
* food, drinks and dessert are included in the ticket price, students will not need any money
* a photo booth will be provided for students to take pictures
* a volunteer will monitor the library where students can place their personal belongings for safe keeping (tux jackets, purses, etc) just keep in mind that no one needs to bring money as nothing will be for sale

ATTENTION PARENTS. The SLMS Yearbook Staff is closing in on their deadline and are in need of spring sports pics to include in this year’s annual. The sports they currently need photos for are the Girl’s Soccer, Boy’s Soccer, Baseball, Softball and Archery. Dismissal map for 6th grade dance tonight! If you come prior to 8 pm to check your student out early, please come thru the bus loop. Those waiting for 8 pm dismissal will use the regular pick up/drop off system displayed below. If you want to check your student out and get in the dismissal line, you may end up stuck for a little while!

6th Grade Dance
Fri, Sept 8th, 6 till 8 pm
Tickets will be sold Tues thru Thurs next week from 7:45 till 8:10 am in the concession stand and will be $5 each.
Pizza, soft drinks and other snack items will be for sale at the dance. Drop off/pick up will take place just like during a reg school day. If you want your child to leave prior to 8 pm, someone on their emergency card will have to come into the front office and check them out. Dances are closed events so only staff and pre-approved volunteers will be permitted inside. Dress code is the same as the school day.

Our 6th grade dance really serves the purpose of an informal party for our youngest group of kids. We will have a DJ and music but most of our 6th graders will chase each other around the gym and try to eat an entire pizza while spending every dime you give them on sour candy lol - from a mom who has been doing this for a long time ....
