Happy Mother’s Day!
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Most manatee calves are born in spring and summer (and they’re the cutest thing you’ve ever seen). A mama manatee produces a single (adorable) calf about every two to five years and is preggers for about 12 months. When the (preciously plump) calf is born, it’s about 4 ft long and about 70 lb. The (sweet-as-can-be) newborn calf is capable of swimming to the surface on its own for its first (adorb little) breath. Calves squeak soon after birth (uh huh!), an auditory communication and important part of the (darling) mother-calf bonding process. The (lovable) calf begins to nurse within a few hours after birth by suckling under the mama’s pectoral flippers, and begin nibbling (chamingly, I’m sure) on plants within a few weeks of birth. The (immeasurably delightful) calf remains close to its mamma for up to two years. It is dependent on her not only for nutrition, but also for learning about life! Hooray for mama manatees and to all of our mamas too!

It's about that time! The first manatee of the season was spotted earlier this week! Throwback to this scene from a while back... Shown here is a dogpile of nearly 20 mating manatees we spotted while on tour. Looking forward to their return in the next few weeks!

The folks standing with me in the checkout lane at Publix will probably never forget or fully understand what happened that moment I first saw it on the rack there. It was a complete surprise for me and everyone else in line, no doubt. Best believe I high-fived strangers like I'd just won the Boston Marathon. I almost ran out without paying!

"Almost seven hundred feet high it stood, three times the height of the tallest tower in the stronghold it sheltered… the top was wide enough for a dozen armored knights to ride abreast. The gaunt outlines of huge catapults and monstrous wooden cranes stood sentry, like the skeletons of great birds, and among them walked men in black as small as ants… It was older than the Seven Kingdoms, and when he stood beneath it and looked up, it made him dizzy. He could feel the great weight of all that ice pressing down on him, as if it were about to topple, and somehow he knew that if it fell, the world fell with it."
– A Song of Ice and Fire, GRRM

It’s actually just an everyday escarpment. Barely a foot high. Eroded not by the unrelenting wind and frigid spray of the Bay of Seals off the coast of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, but rather the placid and warm lapping waves of the Gulf of Mexico on the Key of Longboat. I just wish Cary had one of our old dinosaur toys to place into the shot because that would have been epic. Valar morghulis

You just never know what you’ll find… First for us! 🦖
During a recent tour, this exhausted iguana climbed aboard Alan’s kayak for a bit before taking off again. While iguanas are very common down south, we’re at pretty much the northern extreme of their invasive range here in Florida. They don’t usually make it though the occasional cold winter this far north. We haven’t had one of those in a while though. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start finding more. .mcnaughton
