Sensitive content warning 👇

In July 2011, 32-year-old Rebecca Zahau was found dead under highly unusual circumstances at the historic Spreckels Mansion in Coronado, California, owned by her boyfriend Jonah Shacknai’s family.

Her body was discovered hanging from a balcony, hands and feet bound, with a gag in her mouth, and a cryptic message scrawled nearby. Authorities quickly ruled her death a su***de, but the scene raised deep suspicions, fueling widespread controversy and grief.

Only two days prior, Jonah’s young son, Max, had suffered a fatal fall under Rebecca’s watch, a tragic accident that many believed could have influenced Rebecca’s mysterious death.

In 2018, following years of unanswered questions, Rebecca’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, determined to bring justice to what they felt was a cover-up. In a civil trial, a jury ultimately held Jonah’s brother, Adam Shacknai, responsible for Rebecca’s death, ruling it a wrongful act. Adam, who has always maintained his innocence, was never criminally charged, and the ruling has done little to quiet public debate over what really happened.

With its complex web of evidence, theories, and unresolved questions, Rebecca Zahau’s story stands as one of California’s most unsettling mysteries.

Hochman said he'll look at each case individually, particularly looking at the defendant's history and the impact to the victim on the potential release of the Menendez brothers.

Hochman says he has to play catch up to make a determination.

"I've got to actually look at the thousands of pages of confidential prison files that I don't have access to read, thousands of pages of transcripts from months-long trials," he said. "I've got to speak to the prosecutors, law enforcement, the defense victim, family members. And only then will I be in a position to determine if the current resentencing request is just that," he said.

LA County's incoming district attorney, Nathan Hochman, says that his administration will operate much differently than that of George Gascón - including how the Menendez brothers case is handled.

Bugsy Siegel 🔍

On June 20, 1947, notorious mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, known as a driving force behind Las Vegas' glitzy casino empire, was brutally gunned down in Beverly Hills. Here’s a look at the facts and lingering questions that make his death one of organized crime's most enduring mysteries:

- The Crime Scene: Siegel was killed while relaxing in his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s home. A hail of bullets came through the window, hitting him several times and instantly killing him. The final, deadly shot was delivered to his right eye—an eerie calling card associated with mob retribution.

- The Investigation: Despite extensive police efforts, no one was ever convicted for Siegel’s murder and rumors swirled about who ordered the hit.

- Possible Motives: Siegel’s costly Flamingo venture strained his relationships with mafia leaders back East, who had invested in the project. Though the Flamingo eventually became a success, mob leaders were reportedly tired of the delays and the costs—and Siegel’s lavish lifestyle didn’t help his case.

- The Suspects: Some speculate that Siegel’s own business associates, such as Meyer Lansky, turned on him. Others believe his girlfriend, Virginia Hill, may have tipped off his killers, as she was suspiciously out of town during the murder.

Bugsy Siegel’s death remains an unsolved case and a reminder of the brutal code that governed the world he was part of.

"Trick or Treat"" Murder of 1957

On Halloween night in 1957, Peter Fabiano, a husband and father in the quiet L.A. suburb of Sun Valley, answered his door to an unexpected visitor. When he opened the door, he faced a masked stranger who shot him point-blank, leaving him for dead. At first, the killing seemed random, but the investigation soon revealed a twisted love triangle between Peter, his wife Betty, and her lover, a woman named Joan Rabel.

Joan and Betty’s relationship took a sinister turn, leading them to concoct a murder plot disguised as a trick-or-treater encounter. Sometimes, the darkest stories come to life on Halloween night.

The King of LA’s Underworld: Mickey Cohen 💥

When it comes to gangsters in Los Angeles, Mickey Cohen is the name that stands out. From boxer to crime boss, Cohen’s story is straight out of a Hollywood movie—except it was real life.

He wasn’t your typical mobster hiding in the shadows. Cohen lived large, rubbing elbows with Hollywood elites, flaunting luxury cars, and making headlines for his bold moves in LA’s criminal world. After his mentor Bugsy Siegel was assassinated, Cohen took over the LA scene, but not without sparking a violent gang war with rival mobsters like Jack Dragna. 🚨 Public shootouts, bombings, and multiple assassination attempts—he survived it all.

💼 The FBI’s Most-Watched
Living in the spotlight came with consequences. Cohen’s lavish lifestyle caught the FBI’s attention, and it wasn’t bullets that took him down—it was tax evasion. But even in prison, his influence remained strong.

🎬 Cultural Icon
From surviving bombings to becoming a Hollywood socialite, Mickey Cohen left a lasting mark on LA’s history. His life was so extraordinary that he’s been immortalized in films like Gangster Squad.

The story of James Dean's Porsche 550 Spyder, famously known as "Little Bastard," has become a legendary tale.

Dean, purchased the car in September 1955 while preparing to compete in races. However, the car gained a darker reputation after his untimely death in a horrific crash on September 30, 1955, near Cholame, California.

Dean was driving "Little Bastard" to a race in Salinas when he collided with another vehicle, and he died at the young age of 24. The eerie details surrounding the car after the crash gave rise to the belief that it was cursed.

Here are some facts that fuel the argument:

- Dean’s Premonition: Just days before his death, actor Alec Guinness reportedly warned Dean that if he drove the car, he would be dead within a week. Tragically, Dean died just seven days later.

- Post-crash Incidents: After the fatal accident, the wrecked Porsche was sold for parts. Each piece seemed to carry its own curse. Cars that used parts from "Little Bastard" were involved in deadly crashes. For instance, two doctors who bought parts of the engine and drivetrain both experienced serious accidents.

- The Transport Truck: While transporting the wreckage of "Little Bastard," the truck carrying it mysteriously overturned, injuring the driver.

- Disappearance: In 1960, the remaining wreckage of "Little Bastard" was being transported to an exhibit but mysteriously disappeared en route and has never been found since.

While skeptics believe the "curse" is merely a string of coincidences, others are convinced that James Dean's beloved Porsche brought tragedy to all who came into contact with it.
