Though Sinatra always denied he was connected to the mob, he did interact with famous Mafia figures like Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana, with whom he was close friends. The FBI tracked Sinatra for over 40 years, amassing a dossier of thousand of pages about his movements, words, and friendships.

By 1953 singer Frank Sinatra was in a career rut. Producer and Columbia Studios chief Harry Cohn, was casting his new movie, From Here To Eternity, and Sinatra eyed the role as his ticket to reviving his fading star. He spoke to his friend Johnny Roselli to ask for help. Fortunately for Ol' Blue Eyes, Rosselli and Cohn got along like a restaurant fire.

Roselli approached Cohn and suddenly the co-star in the film, Eli Wallach, quit the production. Sinatra replaced him in the part, for which he received an Oscar, and skyrocketed his career for the rest of his life.

Remembering Peg Entwistle 🙏

On 9/16 1932, Peg climbed to the top of the H of the Hollywood (land) sign and jumped to her death. RIP.

Millicent Lilian 'Peg' Entwistle (5 February 1908 – 16 September 1932) was a Welsh stage and screen actress. She began her stage career in 1925, appearing in several Broadway productions. She appeared in only one film, Thirteen Women, which was released posthumously. Entwistle gained notoriety after she jumped to her death from atop the 'H' on the Hollywoodland sign in September 1932, at the age of 24.

According to legend, Lana Turner, one of the biggest stars of the forties and fifties, was discovered while cutting class at Hollywood High School.

Lana Turner was famously discovered by "Hollywood Reporter" publisher William R. Wilkerson while sipping a soda at the Top Hat Café in Los Angeles. This chance encounter launched her into stardom, and she soon became one of the brightest stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood. During the years a dispute has arisen over the name of this soda fountain. Some remember it as Curries Ice Cream Parlor. The star herself always called it the Top Hat Cafe. The important fact is that it was next to Hollywood High School and popular as a high school hangout.

But Lana’s glamorous life wasn’t without its dark side. Her relationship with mobster Johnny Stompanato brought her dangerously close to the world of organized crime. In 1958, their volatile romance ended in tragedy when Stompanato was stabbed to death by Lana’s daughter, Cheryl, during a domestic dispute. The case shocked the nation and blurred the lines between Hollywood glamour and Mafia ties.

From soda shop discovery to real-life scandal, Lana Turner’s story was as dramatic as her films.

The Wonderland Murders 👉 Hollywood’s Unsolved Quadruple Homicide

On July 1, 1981, Los Angeles was rocked by one of its most brutal and infamous crimes—the Wonderland Murders. Four people were found savagely beaten to death in a Laurel Canyon home linked to the city's underworld.

The case was tied to notorious figures like p**n star John Holmes, who was allegedly involved in a botched robbery of a drug kingpin, Eddie Nash. The Wonderland gang had targeted Nash’s home days before, triggering a bloody revenge massacre that left crime scene investigators horrified by its brutality. Holmes' connection to the murders turned the trial into a media circus.

The mystery surrounding who carried out the killings remains unsolved, but the case exposed the dark, dangerous side of LA’s glamorous facade.

"Richard Ramirez, the "Night Stalker," was one of California’s most notorious serial killers, arrested in 1985 and convicted of 13 murders, with many more crimes linked to him.

Surprisingly, while in jail, he tried to become pen pals with Sean Penn who was in the same jail in 1987.

Penn was arrested for punching Jeffrey Klein, an extra on the set of his film Colors. Penn was already on probation at the time and was sentenced to 60 days in jail for the assault and for reckless driving. He served 33 days of the 60-day sentence.

Penn was speaking at Loyola Marymount University recently, the Hollywood Reporter says, and noted that both he and Ramirez were in a downtown L.A. jail in 1987.

Penn said “after about a month of seeing each other around,” Ramirez asked for his autograph through a deputy. Then, Penn said, Ramirez wrote in a letter to him: ‘Hey, Sean, stay tough and hit them again -- Richard Ramirez, 666.’

Penn wrote back. “I said, ‘You know, Richard, it’s impossible to be incarcerated and not feel a certain kinship with your fellow inmates. Well, Richard, I’ve done the impossible, I feel absolutely no kinship with you. And I hope gas descends upon you before sanity does, you know?”

The North Hollywood shootout was one of the biggest gun battles in Los Angeles history.

The North Hollywood shootout, also known as the Battle of North Hollywood, was a confrontation between two heavily armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu, and police officers in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles on February 28, 1997.

Both robbers were killed, twelve police officers and eight civilians were injured, and numerous vehicles and other property were damaged or destroyed by the nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition fired by the robbers and police.

The Rise and Fall of the Billionaire Boys Club

In the flashy world of 1980s Los Angeles, the Billionaire Boys Club (BBC) was the ultimate symbol of wealth and power. Led by Joe Hunt, this social and investment club was nothing more than a Ponzi scheme, luring in the sons of L.A.'s elite. The young members, hailing from prominent families, lived extravagantly on the millions they swindled from unsuspecting investors.

But the dream came crashing down in 1984 when Ron Levin, a con artist and the club’s main investor, mysteriously disappeared after allegedly defrauding the BBC out of over $4 million. The scandal escalated when Hunt was arrested for Levin's murder, unraveling a tale of deception, greed, and tragedy.

This notorious story has been captured in both a 1987 miniseries and a 2018 film. It’s a stark reminder that all that glitters isn’t gold.

Virginia Hill (born Onie Virginia Hill) was an American organized crime figure. An Alabama native, she became a Chicago Outfit courier during the mid-1930s. She was famous for being the girlfriend of mobster Bugsy Siegel

As a teenager, Hill quickly ascended in the mob world, starting as an apprentice to bookmaker Joe Epstein in Chicago. Using her looks and talents in laundering money, she became an equal among infamous gangsters like Meyer Lansky, Joe Adonis, and most famously, Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel.

Hill and Siegel's relationship, which began in 1937, fused the interests of rival mob factions. Siegel saw Hill as his ideal woman, while others like Jack Dragna respected her for her discretion, with Dragna once saying she was "the only woman who could be trusted to keep her mouth shut." Epstein, Hill's long-time financial supporter, reportedly told Lansky, "Once that girl is under your skin, it's like a cancer. It's incurable."

On March 24, 1966, in Salzburg, Austria, passersby found the body of Virginia Hill, once the "Queen of the Mob," beside a tree with her coat neatly folded. A note suggested she was "tired of life."

An Austrian official determined the 49-year-old had died from a self-administered overdose, consistent with her history of near-fatal pill-swallowing since the 1940s.

Photograph dated December 11, 1950 reads,

"A blast from a shotgun ended the life of Samuel L. Rummel, attorney for Mickey Cohen, early today. Death of the criminal lawyer may be the opening shot in a gangland struggle for control of city and county rackets, investigators surmised. Detectives said that Rummell was shot as he was approaching the front steps of his home at 2600 Laurel Canyon Blvd. The attorney, who had represented Cohen and his associates in many famous cases recently, was shot in the neck at about 1:30 a.m.

08/07/2024

Donald Cortez Cornelius was an American TV show host and producer widely known as the creator of the nationally syndicated dance and music show Soul Train, which he hosted from 1970 until 1993.

At around 4 a.m. PST on February 1, 2012, police were called to Cornelius's home in Los Angeles after reports of a shooting. He was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at the age of 75.

An autopsy found that Cornelius had been suffering from seizures during the last 15 years of his life, a complication of a 21-hour brain operation he underwent in 1982 to correct a congenital deformity in his cerebral arteries. He admitted that he was never quite the same after that surgery, and it was a factor in his decision to retire from hosting Soul Train in 1993.

Don Cornelius' lasting legacy is his impact on diversifying pop culture and giving rise to a hugely influential group of black performers.
