In a mystery like this one, myth and fact can easily merge. We tend to agree with something Anne Redding (a criminal justice scholar) once said about the case...

“What have I learned in my 30-plus years researching this case, is there are an awful lot of rabbit holes to go down — and I have headfirst dove into every one,” she said. “If you want to avoid doing that yourself, I encourage you to disregard theories that depend upon vast LAPD conspiracies or require you to suspend disbelief.”

What myths or facts stand out for you in the case?

Randy Kraft: "The Scorecard Killer"
Sensitive content below
🕵️‍♂️ Active Years: 1971–1983
🔪 Crimes: Convicted of 16 murders, though authorities suspect he killed as many as 67 men.

Randy Kraft, infamously known as "The Scorecard Killer," terrorized Southern California during the 1970s and early 1980s. His chilling nickname came from a cryptic list authorities found in his possession, believed to be a "scorecard" documenting his victims. Each entry was encoded with cryptic descriptions of his murders.

On May 14 1983, at around one o’clock in the morning, CHP pulled over an erratically driven car on the 405 near Mission Viejo.

Kraft stumbled out of the driver’s side, a beer bottle spilling, attempting to explain to police that he had been drinking but was sober. After failing a sobriety test, what was thought to be a routine DUI scenario altered when an officer noticed a slouched male in the passenger seat, barefoot and partially undressed with red marks surrounding the surface of his neck.

Along with the body and nine different prescription drugs, police discovered a strangely coded list—one which began with STABLE and ended with WHAT YOU GOT—that investigators claimed was his list of murders; Kraft accorded it to his obsessive-compulsive disorder, claiming it was just a list of friends and lovers.

After years of mounting evidence and a trial that was the lengthiest and most expensive in Orange County at the time, Kraft attempted to present himself as a respectable, tax-paying veteran and citizen. However, the prosecutors’ evidence was too overwhelming, as a jury convicted him and recommended the death penalty on August 11, 1989; on November 29, Judge Donald McCartin made it official. Kraft was convicted for sixteen murders though investigators think he accountable for sixty-seven and is currently incarcerated on death row at San Quentin State Prison in Marin County, California

Flashback to 2008 and one of California’s most shocking Holiday crimes ⬇️ 🔎

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, 2008, Bruce Pardo, dressed in a Santa suit, arrived at his former in-law’s house in Covina in a rental car. He had with him multiple handguns and a large gift-wrapped package containing a rolling air compressor converted to spray racing fuel.

Joy turned to terror when Bruce Pardo, dressed as Santa Claus, entered the home. His contentious divorce from Sylvia Ortega had just been finalized. He started shooting with two handguns and sent the house on fire with a flamethrower. One first responder called the scene “apocalyptic.”

Nine people were killed and others were shot and injured before Pardo turned a gun on himself.

Some light Holiday Reading 👉

Dorothea Puente, the notorious "Death House Landlady," operated a boarding house at 1426 F Street in Sacramento, where she murdered several tenants in the 1980s. She lured vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and disabled, into her home, promising care but ultimately drugging them, cashing their Social Security checks, and burying their bodies in her yard.

In 1988, authorities discovered seven bodies buried on her property, leading to her arrest and conviction for multiple murders. Before settling in Sacramento, Puente spent time in Los Angeles, where she was involved in various fraudulent schemes that it is said, laid the groundwork for her later crimes.

One of California's most chilling serial killer stories. She died on March 27, 2011, at the age of 82, while serving a life sentence at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, California.

Every Holiday season this case haunts...The tragic death of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey on December 26, 1996, remains one of the most perplexing unsolved cases in American history.

JonBenét, a bright and talented child known for her success in beauty pageants, had gone to bed on Christmas night after a festive family celebration. By morning, her mother, Patsy Ramsey, reportedly found a handwritten ransom note on the stairs demanding $118,000 for JonBenét’s safe return. Despite the note, JonBenét’s father, John Ramsey, discovered her body in the basement of their home later that day.

Key Details:
🔍 Cause of Death: Autopsy revealed that JonBenét died from strangulation and a skull fracture. Evidence suggested she had been restrained and suffered additional trauma.

🔍 The Ransom Note: The lengthy, two-and-a-half-page note raised many questions. Critics pointed to inconsistencies and argued it seemed staged, as it was unusually detailed and written on paper from inside the Ramsey home.

🔍 The Crime Scene: From the beginning, the investigation was fraught with errors. The police allowed multiple people to walk through the house, potentially contaminating evidence. The decision to not immediately secure the home has been heavily criticized.

🔍 Suspects and Theories:

The Ramsey Family: Early suspicion fell on JonBenét’s parents and older brother, Burke, with some speculating that the crime was an accidental death covered up by the family.

An Intruder: Others believed an intruder broke into the home that night. Supporters of this theory point to a broken basement window and unidentified DNA found on JonBenét’s clothing.

🔍 Forensic Evidence: In 2008, advanced DNA testing cleared the Ramsey family of involvement, citing male DNA found on JonBenét's clothing that did not match any family members. Despite this, debates about the DNA evidence continue to cloud the case.

The Aftermath:
Nearly 30 years later, JonBenét’s murder remains unsolved. The case has inspired countless documentaries, books, and theories, with armchair detectives worldwide still piecing together the puzzle. While law enforcement continues to revisit evidence with new technology, justice for JonBenét remains elusive.

JonBenét’s story is a haunting reminder of how a joyful holiday season can be overshadowed by tragedy. As we remember her, we also reflect on the enduring hope that one day, her case will finally be solved.

🕯️ Do you believe justice for JonBenét is still possible 👇

In 1969, Terry Melcher, Doris Day's son, found himself at the center of one of Hollywood's most chilling stories. Melcher, a music producer, had previously lived at the infamous Cielo Drive house in Los Angeles, the site of the Manson Family murders. Though Melcher had moved out, Charles Manson believed he was still living there. The Manson Family targeted the home in an attempt to get revenge, but Melcher narrowly escaped a horrifying fate, forever intertwining his life with one of history’s most infamous cults.

At that time, Melcher was producing singer Jimmy Boyd’s music for A&M Records. After recording initial tracks, the Manson murders went down, prompting Melcher to go into seclusion. He never completed the session. When police arrested Manson, the media reported he had sent his followers to the house to kill Melcher and Bergen. Manson family member Susan Atkins, who admitted her part in the murders, stated to police and before a grand jury that they chose the house “to instill fear into Terry Melcher because Terry had given us his word on a few things and never came through with them.”

Remembering Janis Joplin ❤️

Janis was found lifeless in Room 105 of the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood, (renamed the Highland Gardens Hotel) where she had been staying while recording her final album, Pearl. Her road manager John Cooke discovered her, she was lying on the floor near her bed, clutching loose change in one hand. There was no evidence of foul play at the scene, but the simplicity of her positioning raised suspicions among those close to her.

The official cause of death was determined to be a he**in overdose, likely exacerbated by alcohol. Toxicology reports confirmed the presence of he**in and barbiturates in her system. However, the potency of the he**in she used that night was unusually strong—several other users reportedly overdosed from the same batch in the weeks surrounding her death.

Rest in Peace 🌹
