I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited most major archaeological sites in the world 🌍 but nothing, absolutely nothing can compare to the Angkor temples in Cambodia.
26 years ago as a young backpacker in Southeast Asia I was making my way here when I was struck by a bus 🚌 in Bangkok and that was the end of that. Anywho I finally made it !
The first time I saw these temples was in images at an art 🖼️ show I was volunteering for to raise money for the victims of land mine accidents in Cambodia at the Armory in NYC. I couldn’t afford to buy art so instead I took 3 postcards with these images and framed them knowing one day, I would come face to face with them.
When I stepped into Angkor, I felt like I’d been transported to my favorite childhood film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which was also filmed here. This ancient site, once the heart of the Khmer Empire, is home to Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. The intricate carvings, the faces of Bayon Temple, and the tree-covered ruins of Ta Prohm tell stories of a civilization that thrived over 1,000 years ago. It’s a place where history and nature blend in the most breathtaking way—a journey I won’t soon forget and one that I will make again.
Here is a travel tip if you visit we recommend you buy the three day pass. Hire a guide for the first day and then go back on your own in the afternoon when it is less crowded and soak it all in.
