The San Gabriel Mountains – the location where Bittaker and Norris had chosen to bring their victims. Proficient serial killers, the ones who dispose of a body without detection, use rural terrain such as wilderness and mountains to kill and dispose of a victim without leaving physical evidence that a crime – let alone a murder – has occurred. All there would be is a missing persons file, if they were even reported missing. This is why Bittaker and Norris decided upon the San Gabriel Mountains. In late April, Bittaker took Norris up to the fire road in the San Gabriel Mountains for the first time. Norris snapped the now-infamous picture of Bittaker using bolt cutters to cut the lock off on the gate of the fire road. They replaced it with their own lock for private access. Bittaker also snapped a picture of Norris smiling on the road as he points to a rattlesnake.

Bittaker & Norris's regular booth at Old Tony's on the Pier.

Old Tony's was a frequent hangout spot for the Toolbox Killers. They liked to sprawl out at this secluded booth in the back corner of the bar, where their nefarious conversations weren't overheard. Staff and customers had no idea at the time that evil was often seated right under their noses.

During the Toolbox Killers' reign of terror, Bittaker had been living at the Scott Motel in Burbank. Bittaker chose to live at this motel especially because it was right next to this local liquor store where teenagers would often hang out front. He would pretend to be a model scout, provide beer and grass, and offer up his unit as a party spot for minors. Bittaker got quite good at luring teens back to the motel to hang with him, and accumulated quite an entourage of "friends." Unfortunately for him, many of these friends would end up testifying against him.

The Toolbox Killers Tour begins and ends at Redondo Beach Pier, which is also the location of the infamous Old Tony's.

Still looking just as it did in 1979, Old Tony’s on the Pier played a pivotal role for Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris during their prowling days. After their release from prison, Old Tony’s became a bar they often frequented together and worked as their usual “meeting” place. The killers used to prey for potential victims from the upstairs crow’s nest, and even had themselves their own booth.

As Bittaker disturbingly quoted himself saying to Norris, “There are plenty of fish in the sea.”

Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris, more infamously known as the Toolbox Killers, had photographs of numerous unknown women and had their eyes on countless more they were planning to target for their attacks.

Laura Brand, founder of City of Angels Dark Tours and the Toolbox Killers Tours, has dedicated her work toward finding the unknown victims from the case and recovering the bodies of two known victims - Cindy Schaefer and Andrea Hall - whose bodies were never found. Serial killer Lawrence Bittaker revealed the locations of these victims to Ms Brand during her five year interviewing process with him as he sat on death row.

15-year-old Kristin Messinger, among a few others, is a survivor of the Toolbox Killer’s as one that got away.

Unbeknownst to her then, Kristin escaped a terrible fate not once, but twice. Kristin had no idea she was attacked by one of the Toolbox Killers until 2019, when Laura Brand tracked her down.
