Uh, human beings have only existed for an eye link in the history of the cosmos.
Whether or not we are hit by this particular catastrophe, the sun will die. And before that, the earth will be sucked into the sun. And before that, human life will be long extinct from the earth.
Human beings made by then have emigrated around the solar system, and beyond the solar system to other planets.
A gamma-ray burst (GRB) is an immensely powerful explosion that occurs in distant galaxies. If a gamma-ray burst were to hit Earth, it would have catastrophic consequences due to the immense energy it releases. Here’s what might happen:
Atmospheric Ionization: The burst would ionize the Earth's upper atmosphere, potentially disrupting the ozone layer and causing significant damage to the biosphere by allowing harmful solar and cosmic radiation to pe*****te.
Surface Effects: The burst could cause significant heating of the Earth's surface, potentially leading to widespread wildfires and ignition of flammable materials.
Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP): The burst could produce an intense electromagnetic pulse, similar to that of a nuclear explosion but far more powerful. This could damage or destroy electronic devices and power grids over large areas, leading to widespread blackouts and disruption of communication systems.
Biological Impact: The burst’s radiation would be lethal to most forms of life, causing widespread extinction events. Organisms not directly affected by radiation could still suffer due to ecological disruption caused by the collapse of food chains and ecosystems.
Climate Effects: The burst might induce changes in the Earth's climate due to the alteration of atmospheric chemistry and circulation patterns, leading to long-term effects such as global cooling or warming.
However, it's important to note that the likelihood of a gamma-ray burst hitting Earth directly is extremely low due to their rarity and the vastness of space. Additionally, Earth's atmosphere provides some protection from the most harmful effects of gamma radiation. Nonetheless, the impact of a nearby burst on Earth could still be significant and devastating.
